2022 Wolferton Stakes Preview

One of the newest races at the Royal Ascot festival, the Wolferton Stakes is a listed race established in 2002. Open to runners aged four years old or older, the race is run over just shy of one mile and two furlongs (1m1f 212y). The race was originally added to Royal Ascot when the festival was extended to five days and was a handicap race.

In 2018, the race was moved to the opening day and was no longer a handicap race, meaning since 2018 it has been a listed race. No previous Group 1-2 winners are allowed to enter with Listed (3lb) and Group 3 (5lb) winners getting penalties whilst fillies get a 5lb allowance.

We also have a dedicated Royal Ascot Betting Picks page that will cover this race as well as all of the other races on the day of the race, see which runners the OLBG racing tipsters are predicting to win this race and the others on the cards.

The runner that holds the record over the past 20 renewals for the slowest time in the race was set in the 2020 renewal when Mountain Angel from Roger Varian who under the guidance of James Doyle, won in a time of 2:11.90, whilst at the other end of the spectrum, Perfect Stride, trained by Sir Michael Stoute and ridden by Ryan Moore set the quickest time of 2:03.24 in the 2009 renewal.

These are the top three quickest run Wolferton Stakes over the last 20 renewals:

  • 2009 - Perfect Stride (2:03.24)
  • 2018 - Monarchs Glen (2:03.71)
  • 2003 - In Times Eye (2:03.93)

How competitive is the Wolferton Stakes market? When looking at the over-rounds for the last 20 renewals, the most competitive market was in 2008 when the race had an over-round of 113%. The race in 2017 was a race that was most in the bookie's favour with an over-round of 130%, whilst on average over the last 20 renewals of the Wolferton Stakes, the over-round has been 124% that means the bookie expects to pay out £100 for every £124 which is bet.

Looking at the future form, is the winner worth following next time out? From the past 20 if you had followed the winner of the Wolferton Stakes next time out then you would have back a total of 5 winners. Backing all 18 runners who have been out since to win at SP next time out, would have returned an LSP of +6.71.
