Established in 1841, the Sussex Stakes is a Group 1 race over one mile which is open to runners who are aged three or older. The race takes place on day two of the Glorious Goodwood festival which is run in late July or early August.

There have been some top-class winners of this race with the likes of Rip Van Winkle, Canford Cliffs and Frankle (Twice), in more recent years we have seen both Lightning Spear and Too Darn Hot successful in the race.

Three-year-old runners get an 8lb allowance for their older opponents carrying 9-0 vs 9-8 with both fillies and mares getting a 3lb allowance.

The race in 2015 was a race that was most in the bookie's favour with an over-round of 129%, whilst on average over the last 20 renewals of the Sussex Stakes, the over-round has been 113%, which means the bookie expects to pay out £100 for every £113 which is bet.

Sussex Stakes Trends:

Looking at the future form, is the winner worth following next time out? From the past 20 if you had followed the winner of the Sussex Stakes next time out then you would have backed a total of 7 winners. Backing all 16 runners who have been out since to win at SP next time out, would have returned an LSP of -5.33. Remember to bookmark the racing tips page to easily access the OLBG racing picks daily.

Over the last 20 renewals, it was Notable Speech, trained by Charlie Appleby and ridden by William Buick who set the fastest winning time in the Sussex Stakes, the runner won the race in a time of 1:35.97 when winning the race in 2024. At the other end of the scale, it was the combination of trainer A P O'Brien and jockey Ryan Moore with Paddington who set the slowest winning time, the race-winning time was 1:47.16 in the 2023 renewal.

These are the top three quickest-run Sussex Stakes over the last 20 renewals:

  2. Court Masterpiece (1:36.10) in 2006
  3. Toronado (1:36.29) in 2013
What the expert says...
A run at Royal Ascot before coming here seems good, the Queen Anne Stakes has been responsible for six winners whilst the St James's Palace Stakes has also produced six winners so watch out for runners coming from either of those races.
