2025 Sussex Stakes Preview

Established in 1841, the Sussex Stakes is a Group 1 race over one mile which is open to runners who are aged three or older. The race takes place on day two of the Glorious Goodwood festival, which is run in late July or early August.

There have been some top-class winners of this race, with the likes of Rip Van Winkle, Canford Cliffs and Frankel (Twice). In more recent years, we have seen both Lightning Spear and Too Darn Hot successful in the race.

Three-year-old runners get an 8lb allowance for their older opponents carrying 9-0 vs 9-8 with both fillies and mares getting a 3lb allowance.

For sponsorship purposes, the 2025 renewal of the Sussex Stakes will hold the title of 'Visit Qatar Sussex Stakes'.

How competitive is the Sussex Stakes market? When looking at the over-rounds for the last 20 renewals, the most competitive market was in 2012 when the race had an over-round of 106%. The race in 2015 was a race that was most in the bookie's favour with an over-round of 129%, whilst on average over the last 20 renewals of the Sussex Stakes, the over-round has been 113%, which means the bookie expects to pay out £100 for every £113 which is bet.

Below you will find the 2025 Sussex Stakes Trends. See which patterns have occurred over the recent renewals that you may be able to use for the next renewal. We also have a section that looks at the Sussex Stakes Trend Analysis. With the field now finalised, we have the Sussex Stakes Trend Shortlist, which is created using the listed trends.

These are the top three quickest-run Sussex Stakes races over the last 20 renewals:

 1. Notable Speech (1:35.97) in 2024
 2. Court Masterpiece (1:36.10) in 2006
 3. Toronado (1:36.29) in 2013

Looking at the future form, is the winner worth following next time out? Over the past 20 renewals, if you had followed the winner of the Sussex Stakes next time out, then you would have backed a total of 7 winners. Backing all 17 runners who have been out since their win at SP next time out would have returned an LSP of -6.33. Remember to bookmark the racing tips page to access the OLBG racing picks easily daily.

The runner that holds the record over the past 20 renewals for the slowest time in the race was set in the 2023 renewal when Paddington from A P O'Brien under the guidance of Ryan Moore, won in a time of 1:47.16, whilst at the other end of the spectrum, Notable Speech, trained by Charlie Appleby and ridden by William Buick set the quickest time of 1:35.97 in the 2024 renewal.

What the expert says...

A run at Royal Ascot before coming here seems good, the Queen Anne Stakes has been responsible for six winners, whilst the St James's Palace Stakes has also produced six winners, so watch out for runners coming from either of those races.
