2022 Goodwood Cup Preview

The Goodwood Cup features on the opening day of the Glorious Goodwood festival which takes place in late July or early August, the race is a Group 1 for runners aged three or older and is a real test of stamina over a two-mile trip. Three-year-old runners run off 8-8 with the older runners off 9-9 meaning there is a big allowance for the younger runners, fillies and mares also get a 3lb allowance. The race is the second leg of the Stayers' Triple Crown, the Ascot Gold Cup being the first leg and then the Doncaster Cup being the final leg.

The 2019 success of Stradivarius meant the runner had won the race for the third year running, the only other runner to win the race three times was Double Trigger although not consecutively, Stradivarius went on to win in 2020 also making it four successes on the bounce!

To see which runners the OLBG racing tipsters are tipping throughout the card that includes this race, head over to the Goodwood Betting Picks on the day of the race, do they agree with the runners on the trend shortlist or are they predicting other runners?

Over the last 20 renewals, it was the A P O'Brien trained Yeats ridden by Mick Kinane who has set the fastest winning time in the Goodwood Cup, the runner won the race in a time of 3:21.55 that was set when winning the race in 2006. At the other end of the scale, it was the combination of trainer Alan King and jockey Hollie Doyle with Trueshan who set the slowest winning time, the race-winning time was 3:37.05 in the 2021 renewal.

These are the top three quickest run Goodwood Cup over the last 20 renewals:

  • 2006 - Yeats (3:21.55)
  • 2002 - Jardines Lookout (3:21.63)
  • 2010 - Illustrious Blue (3:22.35)

The race in 2006 was a race that was most in the bookie's favour with an over-round of 130%, whilst on average over the last 20 renewals of the Goodwood Cup, the over-round has been 118% that means the bookie expects to pay out £100 for every £118 which is bet.

Looking at the future form, is the winner worth following next time out? From the past 20 if you had followed the winner of the Goodwood Cup next time out then you would have back a total of 4 winners. Backing all 19 runners who have been out since to win at SP next time out, would have returned an LSP of -11.00.
