2025 Goodwood Cup Preview

The Goodwood Cup features on the opening day of the Glorious Goodwood festival, which takes place in late July or early August. The race is a Group 1 for runners aged three or older and is a real test of stamina over a two-mile trip.

Three-year-old runners run off 8-8 with the older runners off 9-9, meaning there is a big allowance for the younger runners. Fillies and mares also get a 3lb allowance. The race is the second leg of the Stayers' Triple Crown, the Ascot Gold Cup being the first leg, and then the Doncaster Cup being the final leg.

The 2019 success of Stradivarius meant the runner had won the race for the third year running; the only other runner to win the race three times was Double Trigger, although not consecutively. Stradivarius went on to win in 2020, also making it four successes on the bounce!

For sponsorship purposes, the 2025 renewal of the Goodwood Cup will hold the title of 'Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes'.

How competitive is the Goodwood Cup market? When looking at the over-rounds for the last 20 renewals, the most competitive market was in 2024 when the race had an over-round of 110%. The race in 2006 was a race that was most in the bookie's favour with an over-round of 130%, whilst on average over the last 20 renewals of the Goodwood Cup, the over-round has been 118%, which means the bookie expects to pay out £100 for every £118 which is bet.

Below you will find the 2025 Goodwood Cup Trends. See which patterns have occurred over the recent renewals that you may be able to use for the next renewal. We also have a section that looks at the Goodwood Cup Trend Analysis. With the field now finalised, we have the Goodwood Cup Trend Shortlist, which is created using the listed trends.

These are the top three quickest-run Goodwood Cup races over the last 20 renewals:

  1. Kyprios (3:21.53) in 2024
  2. Yeats (3:21.55) in 2006
  3. Illustrious Blue (3:22.35) in 2010

Looking at the future form, is the winner worth following next time out? Over the past 20 renewals, if you had followed the winner of the Goodwood Cup next time out, then you would have backed a total of 7 winners. Backing all 20 runners who have been out since their win at SP next time out would have returned an LSP of -6.27. Ahead of the 2025 Goodwood Cup, why not head over to the racing predictions for tips on other races today?

When looking over the past 20 renewals, a time of 3:21.53 was set by Kyprios in 2024, which is the quickest time over that period. The runner was trained by A P O'Brien and ridden by Ryan Moore. The slowest winning time was set in 2021 when Trueshan won in a time of 3:37.05, booked to ride was Hollie Doyle by trainer Alan King.

What the expert says...
The Ascot Gold Cup has been responsible for eleven of the last twenty winners of this race, with the last coming in 2024 when Kyprios did the double just like it did in 2022, and the last five coming from that race to win this all did the double.
