We're now two months into the NHL season and the four Divisions are starting to take shape with a familiarity amongst many of the teams currently in contention. But as with every season, teams who were predicted to be contenders have struggled, whilst teams who were predicted to struggle have performed above expectations and now have the playoffs in sight. But which team has impressed me the most and which team has disappointed me so far and how can we... [ Read More ]

It's time to start backing the Blue Jackets

Looking at the current NHL league standings, it can be said that the Columbus Blue Jackets have been one of the biggest disappointments of the season. Looks can be deceiving though. The young club, which reached the playoffs for only the second time in its history last season, has so far been ravaged by injuries and this has held them back. So far the Jackets have just 24 points from 28 games. Only the Carolina Hurricanes have a worse record... [ Read More ]

A number of teams will reach the 20-game mark next week in the new NHL season. It's been far from a perfect start for many clubs, but a few are struggling more than expected. Of course, there is still time to improve their fortune, but these following three teams - in no particular order and minus the Columbus Blue Jackets, who's woes are down to injury problems - have to get their act together as soon as possible. Dallas Stars... [ Read More ]

We're now almost two months into the NHL season and it's time to take a first look at one of the trends I want to explore during the season which is the impact of back to back games on teams. Back to back games are common in the NHL and all teams will play their fair share of them and it's how the 2nd game turns out that I want to focus on. Eastern Conference TEAM WINS LOSSES OVERTIME LOSSES... [ Read More ]

NHL: The Ducks had everyone fooled

One of the main storylines during the opening half of the NHL regular season was the slow start of many Stanley Cup favorites. The Anaheim Ducks were one of slumping teams. After three consecutive division titles, Bruce Boudreau's team started the new season by winning only one of their opening ten matches. It got better after that, but there were many calling for the management to blow up the side and rebuild. But in the end, it seems like the... [ Read More ]

Stats on the alternative NHL markets

Last February, I produced a blog which looked at finding alternative value in the NHL, focusing on some of the less traditional markets and using the stats available. We've now passed the All-Star break in the 2015/16 season and teams have played between 51 and 56 games. So how are those stats matching up this season? 3-way moneyline For those who bet on Football (or soccer) this is a familiar market and is just the 60 minute result which means... [ Read More ]

The NHL has its last regular season break this week, starting tomorrow, as the All-Star game takes place on Sunday in Nashville. It's a traditional time when widely respected hockey journalist Bob McKenzie conducts a league wide poll among the NHL head coaches. It features various questions, like who will win the Stanley Cup, who's the best player and so on. This season 27 coaches took part of the poll and the results are very interesting. The majority think that... [ Read More ]

The Oilers are Stanley Cup pretenders

The new NHL season is less than a month old, but there have already been some interesting developments regarding the eventual Stanley Cup champion. The Edmonton Oilers have made a wonderful start and many bookies rate them as the 2nd favorite to with the Cup next June. With a 9-4-1 record after 14 games, there's certainly some ground for these predictions, but I'm not convinced by the side which hasn't played in the playoffs for ten years. Here's a a...
