2027 BetMGM Cup Preview

Inaugurated in 1993, the BetMGM Cup quickly became a staple of "Festival Wednesday". The race is better known to many as the 'Coral Cup', due to the bookmaker's long sponsorship, which ended in 2026.

It has a reputation as a "bookies' race" because it is incredibly rare for a favourite to win. Run over two miles and five furlongs, where there is usually more than one big gamble on the day of the race. However, big price winners of this race are very common, so why not try for an outsider?

Langer Dan for the Dan Skelton yard won this race in both 2023 & 2024; he was the first-ever runner to become a dual winner of this race.

How competitive is the BetMGM Cup market? When looking at the over-rounds for the last 20 renewals, the most competitive market was in 2015, when the race had an over-round of 128%. The race in 2025 was a race that was most in the bookie's favour with an over-round of 146%, whilst on average over the last 20 renewals of the BetMGM Cup, the over-round has been 136%, which means the bookie expects to pay out £100 for every £136 which is bet.

Below you will find the 2027 BetMGM Cup Trends. See which patterns have occurred over the recent renewals that you may be able to use for the next renewal. We also have a section that looks at the BetMGM Cup Trend Analysis.

These are the top three quickest-run BetMGM Cup races over the last 20 renewals:

  1. Whisper (4:58.70) in 2014
  2. Son Of Flicka (5:00.40) in 2012
  3. Diamond King (5:02.90) in 2016

Looking at the future form, is the winner worth following next time out? Over the past 20 renewals, if you had followed the winner of the BetMGM Cup next time out, then you would have backed a total of 3 winners. Backing all 19 runners who have been out since their win at SP next time out would have returned an LSP of -9.62. Whilst we wait for the 2027 BetMGM Cup, remember you can get daily racing predictions from the expert tipsters on the racing predictions page.

The runner that holds the record over the past 20 renewals for the slowest time in the race was set in the 2024 renewal when Langer Dan from Dan Skelton under the guidance of Harry Skelton, won in a time of 5:32.44, whilst at the other end of the spectrum, Whisper, trained by Nicky Henderson and ridden by Nico de Boinville set the quickest time of 4:58.70 in the 2014 renewal.

What the expert says...
Only two of the last ten winners of the BetMGM Cup came into the race on the back of a win (2020 & 2021); the form coming into this race for the other seven runners reads 40P38052.
