You know how punters get lost in too much data or bet blindly? I break down the stats and trends so you can feel confident you’re betting with more than just gut instinct.

2026 Turners Novices' Hurdle Preview

The Turners Novices Hurdle (registered as the Baring Bingham Novices Hurdle) is a grade one race over two miles and five furlongs for novices that is run at the Cheltenham racecourse. Recent winners Faugheen (2014) and Yorkhill (2016) have both gone on to festival glory in subsequent seasons, so worth keeping an eye on with a view to future big race winners. Faugheen won the Champion Hurdle in 2015, and Yorkhill won the Novices Chase in 2017.

This is often considered the most competitive of the three major novice hurdles. Unlike the Supreme (speed) or the Albert Bartlett (stamina), the Turners requires a horse that can do everything. It’s a high-class, tactical race where being in the right position at the top of the hill is everything.

The race in 2020 was a race that was most in the bookie's favour with an over-round of 126%, whilst on average over the last 20 renewals of the Turners Novices' Hurdle, the over-round has been 118%, which means the bookie expects to pay out £100 for every £118 which is bet.

Below you will find the 2026 Turners Novices' Hurdle Trends. See which patterns have occurred over the recent renewals that you may be able to use for the next renewal. We also have a section that looks at the Turners Novices' Hurdle Trend Analysis. With the field now finalised, we have the Turners Novices' Hurdle Trend Shortlist, which is created using the listed trends.

These are the top three quickest-run Turners Novices' Hurdle races over the last 20 renewals:

  1. Faugheen (4:54.80) in 2014
  2. Simonsig (4:59.34) in 2012
  3. Yorkhill (5:00.89) in 2016

Looking at the future form, is the winner worth following next time out? Over the past 20 renewals, if you had followed the winner of the Turners Novices' Hurdle next time out, then you would have backed a total of 12 winners. Backing all 20 runners who have been out since their win at SP next time out would have returned an LSP of -2.25. Whilst we wait for the 2026 Turners Novices' Hurdle, remember you can get daily racing predictions from the expert tipsters on the racing predictions page.

Over the last 20 renewals, it was Faugheen, trained by W P Mullins and ridden by R Walsh, who set the fastest winning time in the Turners Novices' Hurdle. That runner won the race in a time of 4:54.80 in 2014. At the other end of the scale, it was the combination of trainer W P Mullins and jockey Paul Townend with Ballyburn who set the slowest winning time; the race-winning time was 5:22.96 in the 2024 renewal.

What the expert says...
The Tattersalls Ireland Novice Hurdle at Leopardstown has produced two of the last four winners of this race, with Sir Gerhard (2022) and Ballyburn (2024) winning both races, as well as the 2015 winner (Windsor Park) and the 2018 winner (Samcro).
