You know how punters get lost in too much data or bet blindly? I break down the stats and trends so you can feel confident you’re betting with more than just gut instinct.

2027 Stayers Hurdle Preview

Introduced in 1972, the Stayers Hurdle is where legends are truly made. It is a race that repeat offenders love, because stamina is such a specific requirement; once a horse finds they have it, they often return year after year. Run over three miles where runners face twelve hurdles, it was formerly known as the World Hurdle.

Since 2002, Baracouda and Inglis Drever have retained their crown the following season, the magnificent Big Bucks won four on the bounce between 2009 and 2012, and Flooring Porter won back-to-back races in 2021 & 2022, so give plenty of respect to returning previous winners of the Stayers Hurdle.

How competitive is the Stayers Hurdle market? When looking at the over-rounds for the last 20 renewals, the most competitive market was in 2022, when the race had an over-round of 113%. The race in 2020 was a race that was most in the bookie's favour with an over-round of 126%, whilst on average over the last 20 renewals of the Stayers Hurdle, the over-round has been 119%, which means the bookie expects to pay out ÂŁ100 for every ÂŁ119 which is bet.

Below you will find the 2027 Stayers Hurdle Trends. See which patterns have occurred over the recent renewals that you may be able to use for the next renewal. We also have a section that looks at the Stayers Hurdle Trend Analysis.

These are the top three quickest-run Stayers Hurdle races over the last 20 renewals:

  1. Cole Harden (5:40.70) in 2015
  2. Thistlecrack (5:42.60) in 2016
  3. Big Bucks (5:44.20) in 2012

Looking at the future form, is the winner worth following next time out? Over the past 20 renewals, if you had followed the winner of the Stayers Hurdle next time out, then you would have backed a total of 9 winners. Backing all 19 runners who have been out since their win at SP next time out would have returned an LSP of +3.92. Remember to use the racing predictions along with the information on this page to find a bet on the 2027 Stayers Hurdle.

When looking over the past 20 renewals, a time of 5:40.70 was set by Cole Harden in 2015, trained by Warren Greatrex and ridden by Gavin Sheehan, which is the quickest time over that period. The slowest winning time was set in 2013 when Solwhit won in a time of 6:24.94 for trainer C Byrnes, who booked Paul Carberry in the saddle.

What the expert says...
The Cleeve Hurdle has been a decent prep run for the Stayers Hurdle. Cole Harden (2015), Thistlecrack (2016), Paisley Park (2019) & Lisnagar Oscar (2020) all came here to win this race after running in the Cleeve Hurdle, as well as plenty more before those. The Christmas Hurdle at Leopardstown has also been decent of late, producing both the 2021 & 2022 winner Flooring Porter and then the 2025 winner Bob Olinger.
