Horse Racing Trainers to Follow this month [September 2024]

September 

At the time of writing we have a small profit in August which takes us to around +£50 LSP for the year.

Last September was a poor month, as a result we only have 3 trainers returning and just 8 trainers in total.

GB FLAT TURF

CHARLIE APPLEBY (ALL)

Godolphin trainer who hasn’t quite hit the heights of recent years but has a level stakes profit in three of the last 4 months. 

Solid stuff and 14 winners in 2022 would have given a great chance of breaking even using early prices instead of the SP.

CLIVE COX (2&3YO’S)

Made a loss last year but that is the only blot on his recent copybook.

Early Price figures were +£29.24 LSP in 2022, add that to +£46.50 in 2019, +£23.62 in 2020 and +£33.63 in 2021.

These are some of the best stats we’ll find so I think it would be foolish not to give him another chance. 

Remember to exclude the 4yo+ runners, he’s 5/69 and has a (£33) LSL with those runners over the same period.

JAMIE OSBORNE (ALL)

Lambourn trainer and I think this is his first appearance in the blog. 

Nothing too exciting but reasonably progressive and can throw in the odd big priced winner.

RALPH BECKETT (2&3YO’S)

The only winning trainer from last September, has solid figures dating back 10 years, I’ve just listed the last 4. 

Our Early Price figures were +£12.25 last year, over 11 points bigger so get on early.

GB NH

MARTIN KEIGHLEY (ALL)

Gloucestershire trainer and another blog virgin. 

Won’t keep us too busy but pretty solid stuff, should prove a good addition.

JEDD O’KEEFFE (ALL)

Another newbie to the blog and another that won’t have many runners. 

Probably wouldn’t feature in a normal month but good figures were thin on the ground and with so few runners won’t give any risk.

IRISH FLAT 

P TWOMEY (ALL)

Third month on the trot for the Tipperary trainer, had a better August than July and has solid figures for September. 

Comes into the month with a 29% strike rate in August, let’s hope we can turn the healthy strike rates into a profit.

IRISH NH

BARRY CONNELL (ALL)

I always like some interest in Ireland and this will give us a tiny interest in the NH (none of the usual protagonists have good enough figures).

This guy is top notch as he showed with Marine Nationale and Good Land. 

Connell owns all his own horses so there won’t be many runners but it’s nice to have a little interest in Ireland.  His form coming into the month is decent with a winner and 2 seconds from his last 4 runners.

You’ll have probably gathered it was a little tricky finding good stats this month but hopefully we can make a nice profit in what will be a quiet month.

August

After a good July, at the time of writing we sit at +£40 LSP for the year, August 2023 wasn’t too damaging, just (£10 LSP), as a result we have Eight trainers returning.  We had 14 trainers last August and despite 8 showing a profit we still made a loss so I’ve cut that down to 10 this year, the 8 winners and 2 newbies.

GB FLAT TURF

RALPH BECKETT (ALL)

Back from last month where he has made a small loss but he’s really hit form towards the end of the month which I’m hoping he can carry into August.

Only One bad year, I’d be confident on turning a profit on 16 winners in 2020 with the benefit of early prices and last year was fantastic.

OWEN BURROWS (ALL)

Back from last year where he gave us a small profit, comes into the month on a high having bagged the Group 2 at York on Saturday.

Lambourn trainers who are back from last year where they gave a +£4.57 LSP

Only four years but hard to argue with these figures, they did have a 2yo winner last year that would have doubled the profits but that was their first over the period.

Oxon trainer I really like, could be top class with the right ammunition, solid August figures.

Another back from last month, the Charlton family have had some nice August figures in recent years.

The star of the show the last 2 years with +£39 and £53.08 LSP’s.

Back from last year where he did really well for us, not quite as good in July as last year but he’s had 4 seconds from his last 10 runners at the time of writing.

July

A solid June means we go into the second half of the year with around +£30 LSP.  We had a good July last year and as a result 6 returnees.  We have 8 trainers to go to war with Flat, AW, NH and even some Irish interest.

GB FLAT TURF

WILLIE HAGGAS (3YO’S)

We’ll start with the top performer from last year with almost +£60 LSP

A really solid set of figures to start with, a fantastic strike rate and double figure winners gives plenty of room for early price gains, a good example of this was Mystic Pearl that we bet at 42 on the exchange it won at 22’s, doubling the SP profit.

ANDREW BALDING (2Y0’S)

Another returning from last year where he gave +£27.60 LSP.

Big winner for us in 2022 +£25.08 LSP as we bagged one of his 12/1 winners at 30’s on the exchanges.

Seems to excel with his All weather runners, was second on the money list last year and has some nice recent July figures.

Don’t let the fact that he hasn’t had a winner on the AW in May or June put you off, he only had 2 in each of 21,22 and 23.

June 2024.

We move into the summer and one of the most exciting months of the year with the Derby  at Epsom and the 5 day Royal Ascot meeting. 

At the time of writing we have had a really good May which has put the blog back in profit for the year. 

We made a small loss last June, as a result we have just 5 returning, we have 9 trainers in total, 3 Flat and 6 NH with 2 of those being Irish.

Back from last year where he made a small loss, he’s been the star of the show in the May blog though so comes into the month in good form.

Newmarket trainer who hasn’t appeared in the blog much (if at all).  Plenty to like about his recent June figures.

An interesting inclusion, I felt like he wasn’t as successful over here in recent years but his June figures are really good.

May

A winning April but not enough to get us in front for the year, we currently sit at around (25.00) LSL.

May brings the first classics and the Derby trials, the NH season starts again and the evening racing calendar kicks in.  Plenty to go at and 9 trainers, 3 return from last year.

GB TURF

JOHN & THADY GOSDEN (ALL)

The trainer who has appeared in this blog more than any other over the years, now training with his son but still firing out the winners.

These might not look the best on first glance but 2018 (21 winners) and 2022 (17 winners) means we can expect to add 10-20 extra profit with early prices compared to the SP figures.  2021 was when Thady first entered the partnership and this could have had some effect.  Last year was much more like it and at the time of writing his last 6 runners have won.

AIDEN O’BRIEN (ALL)

The Cashel maestro will send plenty over for Newmarket and will have loads of runners in the subsequent Derby trials; don't be surprised if he lands some with his second or third strings.

North Yorkshire blog virgin, trains a lot of the Nick Bradley racing horses, has some nice May figures.

Horse Racing Trainers to Follow March 2024 [Inc Cheltenham]

A decent February has put us back in front for the year at the tune of +£9.76 LSP.

March is an exciting time for racing fans with the highlight of the jumps calendar in Cheltenham, gone are the days when we could just bet Mullins blind and bag a profit.  The champion trainer will have plenty of winners but loads of runners and little in the way of value.  I’ll highlight the trainers to target at Cheltenham at the end of the blog.

March was a winning month last year and as a result we have 4 renturning, whilst they might not have too  many Cheltenham runners I expect another solid month.

GB NH

HARRY FRY (ALL)

Dorset trainer who is no stranger to the blog, has the most Cheltenham entries of our trainers and has two or three with reasonable chances.

Greystoke trainer, the star of the show last year.

CHELTENHAM TRAINER THOUGHTS

It’s hard to see past the usual suspects, Mullins, Elliott and De Bromhead could have half the winners between them.  Of the GB trainers Henderson looks the most likely with Skelton the man to be with in the Handicaps, especially the Coral Cup, County Hurdle and Martin Pipe.  GB trainers have also bagged the winner of the Ultima in the last 10 years!

February is traditionally a quiet month but we have 8 trainers to go to war with, 5 NH (1 Irish), 3 AW, 5 return after showing a profit last February.

Star of the show in the last 2 years, she gave a £23.41 LSP in 2022 and £23.25 LSP last year.

Back in profit last year after a small loss in 2022, we need to see an improvement this time around.

December

The year has flown past and we go into December at around +£30 LSP which gives up every chance of another winning year. 

We made a small profit last December and as a result we have 4 returning.  

It's been hard trying to find new blood for the month with very few good stats on show so just 1 newbie meaning just 5 in total, this is less than ideal but I’ve trawled through around 300 trainers and it’s the best I can come up with. 

GB NH

VENETIA WILLIAMS (ALL)

We’ve been on her horses the last three December’s and the first two years she made a tiny loss but last year she made a healthy profit

Another regular in the Yule tide blog, the star of the show last December with a +£20.68 LSP.

Glamorgan trainer back from last year, usually finds a couple of nice priced winners in December.

We always put more emphasis on the recent figures and the fact that they are betting better year on year augurs well for the month ahead.

Waterford trainer back from last year where he gave us a +£8.44 LSP.

It’s not going to be a busy betting month so far as the blog is concerned but hopefully a profitable one.

November

A small profit in October meaning we are around level for the year going into the final 2 months.  November was a losing month for us last year so just 2 will return.  We have 7 trainers in total, 3 NH and 4 AW.

PAUL NICHOLLS (NON CHASE)

Champion trainer who generally gets his string firing early.

I know what you're thinking “why are we following a trainer with 7 losing months out of the last 9”?  Well most of the losing months are less than £5 LSL and with double figure winners we would definitely turn those losing months into winning ones using Early prices.   An example of this was July 2022 we made a +£4.18 profit from Mullins, that month he had 17 winners and his SP loss was (£13.52), so £17.60 extra profit from 17 winners.   June 2023 he made an appearance again, our figures showed a +£11.50 LSP from 17 winners, the SP win was just +£3.41 so £8 extra.  His figures are so consistent I’m certain that if he makes a single figure loss we will make a healthy profit.

This might look like a strange inclusion on the face of it but my reasoning is, we made an EP profit from him last year and I rarely omit trainers after a winning month.  The fact we outscored the SP figure by +£8.26 from just 7 winners last year suggests that if something similar had happened in 2020 from 15 winners we would have likely made a profit that year despite the £12.80 loss.  What this does tell us is we have to get on this guy early as his horses are usually well bet.

June

We move into the summer and one of the most exciting months of the year for flat fans with the Derby, Oaks at Epsom and the 5 day Royal Ascot meeting.

At the time of writing we have had a losing May but we still sit at an overall profit for the year which is really good considering we were running at around (£130) LSL this time last year.  June was the month when everything changed, 7/8 winning trainers and a massive 170 LSP.

Again back from last year, just +£11 LSP but still a nice return.  Another who now shares the licence with his son.

Charlie holds the licence on his own now after a brief flirtation with sharing it with his dad, I’m sure his dad still has plenty of influence so I’m confident we can rely on these figures which go back 9 years.

The first trainer who wasn’t here last year, he has figures to match them though.

Nice to have a bit of interest over the water and this guy provides plenty.
