2022 Abernant Stakes Preview

First introduced back in 1969 the Abernant Stakes is named after the sprinter Abernant who was successful in the 40s & 50s. The race is a Group 3 open to three-year-old or older runners and is run over a straight six furlongs. There is a 3lb allowance for fillies and mares whilst penalties for G1 (7lb), G2 (5lbs), G3 (3lbs) winners in the past eight months.

Dick Hern's Boldboy won this race four times between 1974 & 1978, a feat no other runner has achieved. The race can be a springboard to the Palace House Stakes or Duke of York Stakes for those who finish well. For racing tips on this race and all of the others at the Craven Meeting be sure to head over to the Newmarket Tips page.

The runner which holds the record over past 20 renewals for the slowest time in the race was set in the 2016 renewal when Magical Memory from Charles Hills who under the guidance of Frankie Dettori, won in a time of 1:14.84, whilst at the other end of the spectrum, Oxted, trained by Roger Teal and ridden by Cieren Fallon set the quickest time of 1:09.39 in the 2020 renewal.

These are the top three quickest run Abernant Stakes over the last 20 renewals:

  • 2020 - Oxted (1:09.39)
  • 2007 - Asset (1:09.64)
  • 2013 - Tickled Pink (1:09.88)
