The Nell Gwyn Stakes was introduced back in 1961 when the first-ever winner of the race was Verbena for Geoffrey Brooke and Doug Smith.

The race is a Group 3 run over seven furlongs at the Rowley Mile course at Newmarket with the race being open to three-year-old fillies only.
