2027 Dante Stakes Preview

The Dante Stakes had its inaugural running in 1958. The Group 2 flat race is run over a trip of just over one mile and two furlongs at York and is normally run in May and serves as a trial for the Epsom Derby.

The race is open to three-year-old runners, where all runners will carry equal weight of 9-0 except for any fillies who will get a 3lb allowance and any Group 1 winner who gets a 3lb penalty.

How competitive is the Dante Stakes market? When looking at the over-rounds for the last 20 renewals, the most competitive market was in 2022, when the race had an over-round of 104%. The race in 2025 was a race that was most in the bookie's favour with an over-round of 120%, whilst on average over the last 20 renewals of the Dante Stakes, the over-round has been 113%, which means the bookie expects to pay out £100 for every £113 which is bet.

Below you will find the 2027 Dante Stakes Trends. See which patterns have occurred over the recent renewals that you may be able to use for the next renewal. We also have a section that looks at the Dante Stakes Trend Analysis.

These are the top three quickest-run Dante Stakes races over the last 20 renewals:

  1. The Foxes (2:05.84) in 2023
  2. Cape Blanco (2:06.70) in 2010
  3. Wings of Desire (2:07.37) in 2016

Looking at the future form, is the winner worth following next time out? Over the past 20 renewals, if you had followed the winner of the Dante Stakes next time out, then you would have backed a total of 5 winners. Backing all 19 runners who have been out since their win at SP next time out would have returned an LSP of +4.48. Whilst we wait for the 2027 Dante Stakes, remember you can get daily racing predictions from the expert tipsters on the racing predictions page.

When looking over the past 20 renewals, a time of 2:05.84 was set by The Foxes in 2023, trained by Andrew Balding and ridden by Oisin Murphy, which is the quickest time over that period. The slowest winning time was set in 2011 when Carlton House won in a time of 2:13.49 for trainer Sir Michael Stoute, who booked Ryan Moore in the saddle.

What the expert says...
The winner tends to head for the Epsom Derby; between 2007 and 2025, fifteen of them did just that to provide three Derby winners. Those were Authorized (2007), Golden Horn (2015) and Desert Crown (2022).
