2025 Nunthorpe Stakes Preview

The feature race on day three of the York Ebor Festival in August is the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes, the race is one of very few that is open to runners aged two or older and it is run over five furlongs.

Established in 1922 and named after an area of York, the race acts as part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge where the winner of the race gets an automatic spot in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint.

How competitive is the Nunthorpe Stakes market? When looking at the over-rounds for the last 20 renewals, the most competitive market was in 2021 when the race had an over-round of 118%. The race in 2012 was a race that was most in the bookie's favour with an over-round of 132%, whilst on average over the last 20 renewals of the Nunthorpe Stakes, the over-round has been 123%, which means the bookie expects to pay out £100 for every £123 which is bet.

Nunthorpe Stakes Trends:

Looking at the future form, is the winner worth following next time out? From the past 20 if you had followed the winner of the Nunthorpe Stakes next time out then you would have backed a total of 2 winners. Backing all 19 runners who have been out since to win at SP next time out, would have returned an LSP of -13.00. Ahead of the 2025 Nunthorpe Stakes why not head over to the racing predictions for tips on other races today?

The runner that holds the record over the past 20 renewals for the slowest time in the race was set in the 2006 renewal when Reverence from Eric Alston under the guidance of Kevin Darley, won in a time of 1:00.68, whilst at the other end of the spectrum, Battaash, trained by Charles Hills and ridden by Jim Crowley set the quickest time of 55.90 in the 2019 renewal.

These are the top three quickest-run Nunthorpe Stakes over the last 20 renewals:

  1. Battaash (55.90) in 2019
  2. Borderlescott (56.09) in 2008
  3. Meccas Angel (56.24) in 2016
What the expert says...
The King George Stakes has produced six winners of this race with those all coming from the twelve races between 2009 and 2020, however, a word of caution the winner in 2020 (Battaash) was the last time we had a winner come from that race.
