2022 Lonsdale Cup Preview

One for horses with plenty of stamina, the Londsdale Cup is a Group 2 race that is run over two miles and fifty-six yards and is open to runners who are aged three or older. The race takes place on day three of the York Ebor Festival in August of each year. Watch out for runners coming from the Goodwood Cup as that race has produced plenty of winners of this race, nine of the last fifteen winners came from that race and also take note of those who do well in this race and go on to run in the Doncaster Cup.

We also have a dedicated York Betting Picks page that will cover this race as well as all of the other races on the day of the race, see which runners the OLBG racing tipsters are predicting to win this race and the others on the cards.

The runner that holds the record over the past 20 renewals for the slowest time in the race was set in the 2007 renewal when Septimus from A P O'Brien who under the guidance of Johnny Murtagh, won in a time of 3:38.82, whilst at the other end of the spectrum, Millenary, trained by John Dunlop and ridden by T Quinn set the quickest time of 3:22.71 in the 2005 renewal.

These are the top three quickest run Lonsdale Cup over the last 20 renewals:

  • 2005 - Millenary (3:22.71)
  • 2002 - Boreas (3:23.08)
  • 2003 - Bollin Eric (3:23.25)

How competitive is the Lonsdale Cup market? When looking at the over-rounds for the last 20 renewals, the most competitive market was in 2021 when the race had an over-round of 107%. The race in 2018 was a race that was most in the bookie's favour with an over-round of 125%, whilst on average over the last 20 renewals of the Lonsdale Cup, the over-round has been 113% that means the bookie expects to pay out £100 for every £113 which is bet.

Looking at the future form, is the winner worth following next time out? From the past 20 if you had followed the winner of the Lonsdale Cup next time out then you would have back a total of 8 winners. Backing all 18 runners who have been out since to win at SP next time out, would have returned an LSP of +6.96.
