Newbury Racecourse Guide
Newbury in Berkshire is a Grade 1 track packed with quality races under both codes.
The flat highlights include the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes in early May and the Group 2 Hungerford and Dubai Duty-Free. The £200k Lockinge Stakes, Group 1 run over a mile, has been won by top horses like Canford Cliffs, Ribchester and the unbeaten Frankel in the past. On the same day as the Lockinge Stakes, we have the London Gold Cup, a valuable heritage handicap for three-year-olds.
The Spring Trials take place in April and is a day which can provide plenty of pointers for future races, on that day we have the John Porter Stakes and the Fred Darling Stakes which serve as a trial for the classics restricted to fillies, the Greenham Stakes is a race that Frankel won in 2011 before going on to win the 2000 Guineas and the Newbury Spring Cup.
There are also numerous top-class handicaps on the flat, one of the highlights being the Weatherbys Super Sprint, where two-year-old runners compete over five furlongs and the race is unique in that only horses sold under a certain price at auction can enter. Later in the year, we have the Mill Reef Stakes, a Group 2 race late in the flat season, which is one of the last chances for the two-year-old runners to make their mark.
Over Jumps, there is the Grade 1 Challow Novice Hurdle as well as a plethora of Graded jump races, including the Coral Gold Cup (formerly known as the Hennessy Gold Cup) and the Betfair Hurdle in February.
On the same day as the Betfair Hurdle, we have the Denman Chase, named in honour of the Tank and serves as a trial for the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Also on that day is the Game Spirit Chase, which serves as a pointer for the Champion Chase, with plenty of the winners going on to run in that race.
The Ladbrokes Trophy (formerly known as the Hennessy Gold Cup) meeting in November is Newbury's major jumps festival, and national hunt enthusiasts have witnessed the very best top-class chasers win the 'Hennessy' in years gone by, with the likes of Denman carrying a hefty weight of 11 st 12 lbs and jumping his rivals into submission, one of the many highlights.
Also during the two-day November meeting is the Berkshire Novices' Chase, a race won by some top-class chasers in the past, the Gerry Fielden Hurdle and also the Long Distance Hurdle for a chance of an early look at some Stayers Hurdle contenders.
Early in March, the course hosts the Greatwood Gold Cup, a popular handicap chase which has been a favourite of Paul Nicholls, who has produced numerous winners over the years.
Newbury plays host to 23 Group and Graded races in total, which attracts the cream of Southern-based trainers and those from the nearby training centre at Lambourn (14 miles away).
On the flat, Charles Hills, Clive Cox and Mick Channon are all based in or around the Lambourn area. Over jumps, you have Nicky Henderson, Oliver Sherwood and Warren Greatrex. In total, there are over 30 trainers who belong to the Lambourn Trainers Association; runners from this training centre should always be noted by horse racing tipsters.

Newbury Racecourse Map
Flat & National Hunt: Left-handed, the straight mile (for flat races) is a little undulating; otherwise, it's mainly level and suits galloping types. The fences are fairly stiff and are a true test for chasers.
Flat draw bias: There seems to be little bias at Newbury with most races up to a mile run on the wide straight course. In longer races around a bend, there is enough room to keep out of trouble.

Newbury Draw Bias
✅ If you want the most profitable stall at Newbury, then you need to look at races over 6f and focus on stall 8, as this has produced an LSP of +134.13 over the last five years.
❌ When breaking Newbury down into trips, you can look at which stall and trip combination has produced the worst LSP. That would be stall 4 over a trip of 6f, which has, over the last five years, produced an LSP of -77.64.
Here we have the draw bias for Newbury taken into consideration in races with ten or more runners. We will break down the figures by race trips. Draws can be much more important in shorter trips, where runners do not have time to find their position during the race, meaning the draw is probably more important than in races over longer distances.
- Sprints (5f to 7½f)
- Mile (1m to 1m1½f)
- Middle Distance (1m2f to 1m5½f)
The following table shows a breakdown of a group of trips and shows how each position of the draw does, for example, in a twelve-runner race would be Low (Stalls 1-4), Mid (Stalls 5-8) and High (Stalls 9-12). The positions will always be the lowest stall number to the highest.
