2026 Irish Gold Cup Preview

The highlight of the Dublin Racing Festival at the Leopardstown racecourse is the Irish Gold Cup, a Grade 1 featuring some of the best Irish chasers. The race is run over three miles in which these powerhouses will have to contend with seventeen fences on their way to being crowned champion.

The race is usually a good trial for the Cheltenham Gold Cup, 2017 winner Sizing John won this race and then went on to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup adding his name to the list of those who have won both, including Jodami (1993) & Imperial Call (1996).

The runner that holds the record over the past 20 renewals for the slowest time in the race was set in the 2010 renewal when Joncol from Paul Nolan under the guidance of Alain Cawley, won in a time of 6:41.50, whilst at the other end of the spectrum, Bellshill, trained by W P Mullins and ridden by R Walsh set the quickest time of 6:06.70 in the 2019 renewal.

What the expert says...
Most of the winners of this race come from the Savills Chase, since 2006, fifteen of the twenty winners ran in that race last time out although only four of those did the double, Beef Or Salmon (2006), Delta Work (2020) and Galopin Des Champs (2024 & 2025).
