  • 18yo Odds for SPOTY drop from 16/1 to 3/1 with bookmakers after Quarter-Final Success
  • Now Bookmakers make her 5/4 to get to the Final and 7/2 to be US Open Champion
  • Emma Raducanu's Betting odds halved for 2022 Grand Slams, from 33/1 to 16/1 for Wimbledon 2022
  • BBC Love a Tennis Player - Andy Murray won in 2013, 2015 & 2016
  • She would have to break the Olympian Dominance of the award in Olympic years
  • A SPOTY Win for Raducanu would be the first for a Woman since Zara Phillips in 2006

Semi Final

Radacanu was not even in the betting for SPOTY one week ago, Quarter Final US Open success has propelled her to 4/1 second favourite behind Tom Daley in Bookmakers odds

British Tennis ace, Emma Raducanu has won three titles on the ITF circuit but has never been in as lofty a position as a Grand Slam final before.

Well, that has just become a reality after winning her US Open Quarter-final match against Swiss Belinda Bencic in the Quarter Final

Betting sites have reacted by slashing the price of her winning Sports Personality of the Year into 3/1 second favourite behind Tom Daley

Sports Personality of The Year Betting Odds

Nominee Odds Probability
Tom Daley 11/8 42.02%
Emma Raducanu 3/1 25%
Jason Kenny 11/2 15.38%
Adam Peaty 13/2 13.33%
Lewis Hamilton 9/1 10%

**Probability percentage figures include bookmakers overround - odds correct at 9/9/2021

The 18-year-old was not even in the SPOTY betting before she stormed into the quarter final to face Bencic. At that point, Bookmakers made her a 16/1 chance to win the annual award. Fast forward post-victory and semi-final spot and she is now just a fraction of that price at 3/1

4/1 to be US Open Champion

Betting on the next matches for the young Brit is available and she is currently 5/4 and given a 45% chance of progressing to the final, past the Greek player Maria Sakkari who is ranked 17 in the world, some 133 ranking places higher than Raducanu.

Should she win the match which takes place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, she will face either Portuguese No2 ranked Aryna Sabalenka or 66 ranked Canadian Leylah Annie Fernandez who compete in the other Semi-Final at 1am on Friday.

Future Grand Slam Betting

We can be sure bookmakers will react to any result and provide some betting odds for Raducanu to feature in the 2022 Grand Slam betting, but at the time of writing, she has no odds quoted.

  • Australian Open 2022 - 33/1 > 16/1
  • French Open 2022 - 33/1 > 25/1
  • Wimbledon 2022 - 33/1 > 16/1

Reaching the Semi-Final stage of the US Open has seen Emma Raducanu's odds of winning a Grand Slam in 2022 drop from 33/1 to just 16/1 with betting sites. If she progresses to the final, she will be odds on to win SPOTY.

Jo Durie & Virginia Wade

The Quarter Final feat means Raducanu is the first British woman to reach a US open semi final since Jo Durie in 1983 and the first British Woman to reach a Grand Slam semi-final in 46 years.

Make no mistake if she was to succeed in the semi-final, she would be the first since Virginia Wade who won Wimbledon in 1977 to reach a Final and would instantly become favourite for the annual sports award that Wade won the same year.

Tennis Players at Sports Personality of the Year

The BBC has always been proud of its Tennis coverage and in particular, Wimbledon and whilst Britain may not have strength in depth in the professional tennis world, those that succeed do not go unnoticed in the awards show.

Andy Murray is a three times SPOTY winner in 2013, 2015 and 2016 and Emma Raducanu's performance in the US will certainly have qualified a chance of "Sportsperson whose actions have most captured the public's imagination'

Tennis Players in Sports Personality of the Year

Year Player Position
1961 Angela Mortimer 3rd
1969 Ann Jones Winner
1973 Roger Taylor 2nd

Women SPOTY Winners

Emma Raducanu has a chance of breaking the male stronghold on the yearly awards show.

Since Zara Phillips won the Sports Personality of the year award in 2006, no woman has won, and only 7 women have filled the possible 42 finishing positions

Record of Women Sports Stars at Sports Personality of the Year since 2007

Year Sportswoman Sport Position
2008 Rebecca Adlington Swimming 3rd
2009 Jessica Ennis Athletics 3rd
2010 Jessica Ennis Athletics 3rd
2012 Jessica Ennis Athletics 2nd
2014 Jo Pavey Athletics 3rd
2015 Jessica Ennis-Hill Athletics 3rd
2019 Dina Asher-Smith Athletics 3rd
Emma Radacanu can break the absence of Women sports stars at the SPOTY awards and is 4/1 with betting sites to be the first to win since Zara Phillips in 2006

OH! And the money

Emma Raducanu's rise is nothing short of meteoric and is certainly in the sphere of catching the public's imagination as per the qualification for a sports personality winner.

Ranked 150 in the world and having never appeared at a major championship before the beginning of June this year, the 18yo has already guaranteed herself $675,000 for becoming a US Open Semi-Finalist.

Further success will only improve upon that, but she has more than covered the air tickets that have gone to waste after exceeding her own expectations and not returning on her expected schedule.
