2026 Diomed Stakes Preview

Scheduled to take place in June of each year at the Epsom racecourse is the Diomed Stakes, a race which takes place on the day before the Epsom Derby and is named after the first-ever Derby winner, Diomed.

This Group 3 race is contested over a distance of one mile, half a furlong, where runners aged three or older can enter.

For sponsorship purposes, the 2026 renewal of the Diomed Stakes will hold the title of 'Betfred Diomed Stakes'.

How competitive is the Diomed Stakes market? When looking at the over-rounds for the last 20 renewals, the most competitive market was in 2022, when the race had an over-round of 109%. The race in 2010 was a race that was most in the bookie's favour with an over-round of 116%, whilst on average over the last 20 renewals of the Diomed Stakes, the over-round has been 113%, which means the bookie expects to pay out £100 for every £113 which is bet.

Below you will find the 2026 Diomed Stakes Trends. See which patterns have occurred over the recent renewals that you may be able to use for the next renewal. We also have a section that looks at the Diomed Stakes Trend Analysis. With the field now finalised, we have the Diomed Stakes Trend Shortlist, which is created using the listed trends.

These are the top three quickest-run Diomed Stakes races over the last 20 renewals:

  1. Century Dream (1:37.25) in 2020
  2. Zaaki (1:40.46) in 2019
  3. French Navy (1:41.71) in 2014

Looking at the future form, is the winner worth following next time out? Over the past 20 renewals, if you had followed the winner of the Diomed Stakes next time out, then you would have backed a total of 2 winners. Backing all 19 runners who have been out since their win at SP next time out would have returned an LSP of -13.50. Remember to bookmark the racing tips page to access the OLBG racing picks easily daily.

When looking over the past 20 renewals, a time of 1:37.25 was set by Century Dream in 2020, trained by Simon & Ed Crisford and ridden by James Doyle, which is the quickest time over that period. The slowest winning time was set in 2013 when Gregorian won in a time of 1:48.68 for trainer John Gosden, who booked William Buick in the saddle.

What the expert says...
The 2024 winner, Royal Scotsman, came from the Lockinge Stakes and in doing so became the first winner to come from that race since Arod achieved it in 2015, and then it was like buses with the 2025 winner, Persica, also taking that route.
