2026 Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris Preview

Scheduled to take place in May of each year at the Auteuil racecourse is the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris. This race, a Grade 1, is run over a distance of 6,000m or three miles and six furlongs and is the richest French jumps race.

The race was originally established in 1874 to be the equivalent of the Aintree Grand National. It was originally run over 6,400m (4m), however, that was cut to the current 6,000m just one year after its creation.

In 1890, the race underwent further changes, which put it in line with the Cheltenham Gold Cup. The handicap status was scrapped, and a 'weight-for-age' system was adopted instead. The race is now more like the French Gold Cup than the French Grand National.

What the expert says...
The Prix Ingre (x4) and the Prix Murat (x3), which are both run here at Auteuil, are responsible for seven of the last ten winners. Milord Thomas (2015) and Milord Thomas (2017) are the only two from those seven who have won one of those races before winning this.
