2026 Champions & Chater Cup Preview

Scheduled to take place in May of each year at the Sha Tin racecourse is the Hong Kong Champions & Chater Cup. This race is a Group 1, is run on the turf over a distance of 2,400 meters and is open to runners who are aged three or older.

Established in 1870, the race was originally known as the Champion Stakes; however, in 1955 it was combined with another race known as the Chater Cup, hence its current name.

The race is the third and final leg of the Hong Kong Triple Crown, the Hong Kong Stewards Cup is the first leg and the Hong Kong Gold Cup is the second leg, all three races take place at the Sha Tin racetrack and to date, only River Verdon (1994) and Voyage Bubble (2025) have won the Hong Kong Triple Crown.

What the expert says...
Given this is the final leg of the Hong Kong Triple Crown, it's no surprise that plenty of the winners come here having run in the Hong Kong Gold Cup that season, six of the ten winners had done just that, with four of them having won the Gold Cup.
