2026 Deutsches Derby Preview

The German Derby, otherwise known as the Deutsches Derby, takes place at the Humburg racetrack in July of each year and is the German equivalent of the Epsom Derby. This Group 1 race is restricted to three-year-old colts and fillies and was established in 1869 and given G1 status in 1972.

Owner Gestüt Schlenderhan has an incredible record in this race, having won it on no fewer than nineteen occasions, with the latest coming in 2020 with In Swoop, which was their first taste of success; however, in eleven years with Wiener Walzer (2009) was their last winner before that.

How competitive is the Deutsches Derby market? When looking at the over-rounds for the last 10 renewals, the most competitive market was in 2022 when the race had an over-round of 119%. The race in 2018 was a race that was most in the bookie's favour with an over-round of 130%, whilst on average over the last 10 renewals of the Deutsches Derby, the over-round has been 123%, which means the bookie expects to pay out £100 for every £123 which is bet.

Below you will find the 2026 Deutsches Derby Trends. See which patterns have occurred over the recent renewals that you may be able to use for the next renewal. We also have a section that looks at the Deutsches Derby Trend Analysis.

These are the top three quickest-run Deutsches Derby races over the last 10 renewals:

  1. Laccario (2:29.95) in 2019
  2. Weltstar (2:32.44) in 2018
  3. Sammarco (2:32.95) in 2022

Looking at the future form, is the winner worth following next time out? Over the past 10 renewals, if you had followed the winner of the Deutsches Derby next time out, then you would have backed a total of 1 winner. Backing all 8 runners who have been out since their win at SP next time out would have returned an LSP of -3.80. Why not head over to the racing predictions for tips on other races today?

The runner that holds the record over the past 10 renewals for the slowest time in the race was set in the 2016 renewal when Isfahan from A Wohler under the guidance of Dario Vargiu, won in a time of 2:45.97, whilst at the other end of the spectrum, Laccario, trained by A Wohler and ridden by Eduardo Pedroza set the quickest time of 2:29.95 in the 2019 renewal.

What the expert says...
The Union-Rennen, Germany's oldest horse race, has been a decent indication for this race; six of the last ten winners came here having run in that race last time out, with three of those doing the double.
