2026 John Mulhern Galmoy Hurdle Preview

Scheduled to take place in January of each year at the Gowran Park Racecourse is the Galmoy Hurdle. This Grade 2 hurdle is named in honour of Galmoy, who was a dual winner of the Stayers Hurdles (1987-88).

Established in 2002, the race was run at a Grade 3 from 2003 until 2008, when it was upgraded to the current Grade 2. It is contested over two miles, seven and a half furlongs and is open to runners aged five or older. Plenty of the winners head to the Cheltenham Festival, with the Stayers Hurdle the most popular route, although a couple have gone to the Gold Cup.

For sponsorship purposes, the 2026 renewal of the Galmoy Hurdle will hold the title of 'John Mulhern Galmoy Hurdle'.

How competitive is the Galmoy Hurdle market? When looking at the over-rounds for the last 20 renewals, the most competitive market was in 2024 when the race had an over-round of 110%. The race in 2014 was a race that was most in the bookie's favour with an over-round of 123%, whilst on average over the last 20 renewals of the Galmoy Hurdle, the over-round has been 115%, which means the bookie expects to pay out ÂŁ100 for every ÂŁ115 which is bet.

Below you will find the 2026 Galmoy Hurdle Trends. See which patterns have occurred over the recent renewals that you may be able to use for the next renewal. We also have a section that looks at the Galmoy Hurdle Trend Analysis. With the field now finalised, we have the Galmoy Hurdle Trend Shortlist, which is created using the listed trends.

These are the top three quickest-run Galmoy Hurdle races over the last 20 renewals:

  1. Benie Des Dieux (6:08.60) in 2020
  2. Shaneshill (6:10.10) in 2017
  3. Mourad (6:17.10) in 2011

Looking at the future form, is the winner worth following next time out? Over the past 20 renewals, if you had followed the winner of the Galmoy Hurdle next time out, then you would have backed a total of 3 winners. Backing all 19 runners who have been out since their win at SP next time out would have returned an LSP of -7.28. Remember to bookmark the racing tips page to access the OLBG racing picks easily daily.

Over the last 20 renewals, it was Benie Des Dieux, trained by W P Mullins and ridden by Paul Townend, who set the fastest winning time in the Galmoy Hurdle. That runner won the race in a time of 6:08.60 in 2020. At the other end of the scale, it was the combination of trainer W P Mullins and jockey Paul Townend with Monkfish who set the slowest winning time; the race-winning time was 7:27.50 in the 2024 renewal.

What the expert says...
Be careful if you are planning on following the winner next time out if they head straight to the Stayers Hurdle at Cheltenham. Between 2006 & 2025, eight of the winners have taken that route, and their form reads 6352P834!
