2025 Flying Scotsman Stakes Preview

Scheduled to take place in September of each year at the Doncaster racecourse is the Flying Scotsman Stakes, which is run during the St Leger Festival.

The race is a Listed race that is run over a trip of seven furlongs and is open to runners aged two years old. It's a race which was won by Frankel back in 2010 on only his second start!

For sponsorship purposes, the 2025 renewal of the Flying Scotsman Stakes will hold the title of 'Betfred Flying Scotsman Stakes'.

Flying Scotsman Stakes Information:

We also have a dedicated Doncaster tips page that will cover this race as well as all of the other races on the day of the race. See which runners the OLBG racing tipsters are predicting to win this race and the others on the cards. You may also be interested in other preview blogs that we have packed full of information. How competitive is the Flying Scotsman Stakes market? When looking at the over-rounds for the last 20 renewals, the most competitive market was in 2011 when the race had an over-round of 108%. The race in 2018 was a race that was most in the bookie's favour with an over-round of 122%, whilst on average over the last 20 renewals of the Flying Scotsman Stakes, the over-round has been 113%, which means the bookie expects to pay out £100 for every £113 which is bet.

Below you will find the 2025 Flying Scotsman Stakes Trends. See which patterns have occurred over the recent renewals that you may be able to use for the next renewal. We also have a section that looks at the Flying Scotsman Stakes Trend Analysis. With the field now finalised, we have the Flying Scotsman Stakes Trend Shortlist, which is created using the listed trends.

These are the top three quickest-run Flying Scotsman Stakes races over the last 20 renewals:

  1. Librettist (1:22.61) in 2004
  2. Nafaqa (1:23.38) in 2014
  3. Counterglow (1:23.93) in 2011

Looking at the future form, is the winner worth following next time out? Over the past 20 renewals, if you had followed the winner of the Flying Scotsman Stakes next time out, then you would have backed a total of 3 winners. Backing all 19 runners who have been out since their win at SP next time out would have returned an LSP of -5.45. Remember to bookmark the racing tips page to access the OLBG racing picks easily daily.

The runner that holds the record over the past 20 renewals for the slowest time in the race was set in the 2008 renewal when Secrecy from Michael Jarvis under the guidance of Philip Robinson, won in a time of 1:29.26, whilst at the other end of the spectrum, Librettist, trained by Saeed bin Suroor and ridden by Frankie Dettori set the quickest time of 1:22.61 in the 2004 renewal.

What the expert says...
Plenty of the winners of this race head to Newmarket next time out. The Royal Lodge Stakes has been the most popular with New Mandate (2020) and Frankel (2010), both of whom went on to win that race.
