2026 Ormonde Stakes Preview

Named after the horse Ormonde, who retired unbeaten and won the English Triple Crown in 1886, the Ormonde Stakes is scheduled to take place during the May Meeting at the Chester Racecourse.

The race is a Group 3 that is open to runners aged four or older and is run over a trip of one mile, five furlongs and eighty-four yards.

The race can serve as a trial for the Coronation Cup, which is run at Epsom the following month. St Nicholas Abbey (2011) was the last runner to do the double.

For sponsorship purposes, the 2026 renewal of the Ormonde Stakes will hold the title of 'Ladbrokes Ormonde Stakes'.

How competitive is the Ormonde Stakes market? When looking at the over-rounds for the last 20 renewals, the most competitive market was in 2009, when the race had an over-round of 107%. The race in 2008 was a race that was most in the bookie's favour with an over-round of 121%, whilst on average over the last 20 renewals of the Ormonde Stakes, the over-round has been 112%, which means the bookie expects to pay out ÂŁ100 for every ÂŁ112 which is bet.

Below you will find the 2026 Ormonde Stakes Trends. See which patterns have occurred over the recent renewals that you may be able to use for the next renewal. We also have a section that looks at the Ormonde Stakes Trend Analysis. With the field now finalised, we have the Ormonde Stakes Trend Shortlist, which is created using the listed trends.

These are the top three quickest-run Ormonde Stakes races over the last 20 renewals:

  1. Point Lonsdale (2:49.17) in 2024
  2. St Nicholas Abbey (2:52.27) in 2011
  3. Ask (2:52.33) in 2007

Looking at the future form, is the winner worth following next time out? Over the past 20 renewals, if you had followed the winner of the Ormonde Stakes next time out, then you would have backed a total of 7 winners. Backing all 20 runners who have been out since their win at SP next time out would have returned an LSP of +6.17. Ahead of the 2026 Ormonde Stakes, why not head over to the racing predictions for tips on other races today?

Over the last 20 renewals, it was Point Lonsdale, trained by A P O'Brien and ridden by Ryan Moore, who set the fastest winning time in the Ormonde Stakes. That runner won the race in a time of 2:49.17 in 2024. At the other end of the scale, it was the combination of trainer Andrew Balding and jockey William Buick with Buccellati who set the slowest winning time; the race-winning time was 3:45.91 in the 2009 renewal.

What the expert says...
The winner (2005-2024) tends to go on to run in either the Coronation Cup (x6) or the Hardwicke (x5). The only one of those to go on to win the Coronation Cup was St Nicholas Abbey (2011), whilst both Harbinger (2010) & Dartmouth (2016) went on to win the Hardwicke.
