Ascot Racetrack Guide

Ascot in Berkshire is one of the top Flat and National Hunt tracks in the UK. For 5 days in June, it showcases Royal Ascot, with the Queen and Royal Family in attendance. The best flat horses from around the globe compete in 8 Group 1 races, with daily prize money in excess of 1 million pounds.

There are 18 days of flat racing from May to mid-October and 8 National Hunt days from the beginning of November through to the end of March. As a Grade 1 track, it attracts top-quality horses which leads to competitive fields at most meetings throughout the year.

Although right-handed and generally flat, Ascot stages high-quality national hunt racing with plenty of Cheltenham (left-handed and undulating) festival pointers and clues on show throughout the build-up to March.

The fences are stiff and need plenty of jumping, fencing errors will be exposed as will stamina limitations as Ascot takes some 'getting'.

Flat Highlights at the course: Royal Ascot (June), King George Weekend (July) which includes both the International Stakes and King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes, The Shergar Cup (August), QIPCO British Champions Day (Oct). The Victoria Cup which takes place in May is one of the big handicaps on the flat.

National Hunt Highlights: The Christmas meeting features the Grade 1 Long Walk HurdleClarence House Chase Day in January which also features the formally sponsored OLBG Mares Hurdle won by high-quality horses like Vroum Vroum Mag in the past and there is the Ascot Chase Day in February.

There are plenty of decent handicaps over the jumps too with both the Ascot Silver Cup and the Betfair Exchange Trophy featuring on the same day as the Long Walk Hurdle in December as well as the London Gold Cup which takes place in late October.

Right Handed Track, race distances up to one mile on the flat are run on the straight course.

The fences on the chase course are considered stiff and a true test for even the most experienced chasers, there is a slight climb to the line emphasising the need for plenty of stamina.

Ascot Draw Bias

If you want the most profitable stall at Ascot then you need to look at races over 1m and focus on stall 4 as this has produced an LSP of +88.92 over the last five years. With an LSP of -78.25, the most unsuccessful stall at Ascot is stall 7 when backing runners over a trip of 6f over the last five years.

Here we have the draw bias for Ascot taken into consideration races with ten or more runners, we will break down the figures by race distance, draws can be much more important over the shorter trips in which runners do not have time to find their position during the race meaning the draw is probably more important than the races over longer distances.

  • Sprints (5f to 7½f)
  • Mile (1m to 1m1½f)
  • Middle Distance (1m2f to 1m5½f)

The following table shows a breakdown over a group of trips and shows how each position of the draw does, for example in a twelve-runner race would be Low (Stalls 1-4), Mid (Stalls 5-8) and High (Stalls 9-12), the positions will always be lowest stall number to highest.
