2025 Grand Sefton Preview

The Grand Sefton is run over the Grand National fences at Aintree and was switched to be run in November instead of December in 2021. The race is a Class 2 Handicap Chase run over two miles and five furlongs and is open to runners aged six years old or older.

First run back in 1865, the race saw 100 renewals before ending in 1965. However, in 2003 the race was revived and has been run every year since.

For sponsorship purposes, the 2025 renewal of the Grand Sefton will hold the title of 'William Hill Grand Sefton Handicap Chase'.

How competitive is the Grand Sefton market? When looking at the over-rounds for the last 20 renewals, the most competitive market was in 2012 when the race had an over-round of 115%. The race in 2007 was a race that was most in the bookie's favour with an over-round of 132%, whilst on average over the last 20 renewals of the Grand Sefton, the over-round has been 122%, which means the bookie expects to pay out ÂŁ100 for every ÂŁ122 which is bet.

Below you will find the 2025 Grand Sefton Trends. See which patterns have occurred over the recent renewals that you may be able to use for the next renewal. We also have a section that looks at the Grand Sefton Trend Analysis. With the field now finalised, we have the Grand Sefton Trend Shortlist, which is created using the listed trends.

These are the top three quickest-run Grand Sefton races over the last 20 renewals:

  1. King Turgeon (5:23.52) in 2024
  2. Al Dancer (5:27.00) in 2022
  3. Poole Master (5:32.10) in 2014

Looking at the future form, is the winner worth following next time out? Over the past 20 renewals, if you had followed the winner of the Grand Sefton next time out, then you would have backed a total of 2 winners. Backing all 19 runners who have been out since their win at SP next time out would have returned an LSP of -11.25. Whilst we wait for the 2025 Grand Sefton, remember you can get daily racing predictions from the expert tipsters on the racing predictions page.

The runner that holds the record over the past 20 renewals for the slowest time in the race was set in the 2008 renewal when Endless Power from Jim Goldie under the guidance of James Reveley, won in a time of 6:09.20, whilst at the other end of the spectrum, King Turgeon, trained by David Pipe and ridden by Jack Tudor set the quickest time of 5:23.52 in the 2024 renewal.

What the expert says...
Between 2006 & 2022, that is 17 renewals, not a single last time out winner won this race. However, the last two winners both came into the race on the back of a win!
