2026 Grand Sefton Preview

The Grand Sefton is run over the Grand National fences at Aintree and was switched to be run in November instead of December in 2021. The race is a Class 2 Handicap Chase run over two miles and five furlongs and is open to runners aged six years old or older.

First run back in 1865, the race saw 100 renewals before ending in 1965. However, in 2003 the race was revived and has been run every year since.

How competitive is the Grand Sefton market? When looking at the over-rounds for the last 20 renewals, the most competitive market was in 2012 when the race had an over-round of 115%. The race in 2007 was a race that was most in the bookie's favour with an over-round of 132%, whilst on average over the last 20 renewals of the Grand Sefton, the over-round has been 123%, which means the bookie expects to pay out ÂŁ100 for every ÂŁ123 which is bet.

Below you will find the 2026 Grand Sefton Trends. See which patterns have occurred over the recent renewals that you may be able to use for the next renewal. We also have a section that looks at the Grand Sefton Trend Analysis.

These are the top three quickest-run Grand Sefton races over the last 20 renewals:

  1. Colonel Harry (5:18.94) in 2025
  2. King Turgeon (5:23.52) in 2024
  3. Al Dancer (5:27.00) in 2022

Looking at the future form, is the winner worth following next time out? Over the past 20 renewals, if you had followed the winner of the Grand Sefton next time out, then you would have backed a total of 2 winners. Backing all 18 runners who have been out since their win at SP next time out would have returned an LSP of -10.25. Remember to use the racing predictions along with the information on this page to find a bet on the 2026 Grand Sefton.

When looking over the past 20 renewals, a time of 5:18.94 was set by Colonel Harry in 2025, trained by Jamie Snowden and ridden by Gavin Sheehan, which is the quickest time over that period. The slowest winning time was set in 2008 when Endless Power won in a time of 6:09.20 for trainer Jim Goldie, who booked James Reveley in the saddle.

What the expert says...
Between 2008 and 2023, not a single winner of this race went on to win next time out; seven of those recorded a DNF. That run ended in 2024 when King Turgeon went on to win at the Christmas Meeting (Cheltenham) next time out.
