These opening contests at this year's Festival have thrown up some very strange results, I've stared at this for longer than I've wanted (or intended to) of course I've a few scribbled in there are 28 horses to look at but I'm tentatively settling on Liz Doyle's 6 year old Gelding CAPPUCINO who disappointed last time out (@Wexford) when dropping massively in class but if you look at the company he's been keeping - you'd like to think he has one at this level in the locker, So why do 'think' he has a chance this time around? Well we get a nice 7lbs shaved off thanks to jockey Barry Stone (who caught my eye at Cheltenham winning on DAILY PRESENT) who has a 40% place strike rate the past fortnight & 66.67% place strike rate here the past year (45.45% -5 years). This Son of WESTERNER won by 4 lengths here in October (Maiden) & 'Should' have the ground he wants to run his front running style. If this lad gets to run his race (now much lighter) he 'could' be hard to peg back. 6 places in this minefield let's see how we do.

A 4 times winner who ran out a very impressive winner of a Premier handicap Chase at Ayr last month off a mark of 138. Reverts to hurdling here at a lower level off a very attractive mark of 119 and should be hard to beat if in the same form today.

Mercury Mission has managed to win its last two starts, its latest in a 2 miles handicap hurdle at Limerick. So, with a little improvement, it could win this race.

JANES HARBOUR was a beaten favourite last time out when second of 11 in a juvenile hurdle at Limerick over 2 miles 3 weeks ago. She receives the mare's weight allowance here and could improve on what she has shown to date.

Just 4th start for the Derham stable, who had a winner here on Tuesday. Shaped nicely LTO at Newcastle against a well-handicapped rival. Had close battles with Boodles winner Puturhandstogether on final two starts with Joseph O'Brien, so looks well-handicapped.

Has been given a chance here. Now down to a mark of 116. This doesn't look like a deep race by any means. He's still lightly raced in handicap company. Just 2 runs to date. You can excuse both of those runs. He unseated the rider early doors on handicap debut. The ground was just too quick for him last time out. Plus, he was carrying 12st. He evidently doesn't enjoy fast ground. He prefers slower ground. He finished 2nd behind the useful Valgrand on slower ground around this time last season. Only beaten 3L by the winner. That horse ran up to a mark of 132 before passing on his most recent run, unfortunately. That form would make his mark of 116 look workable. The trainer does well when he sends his runners to this meeting. This lad is 1 of 2 runners he sends here. This lad looks to hold the best chance of those 2 horses.

Magic Day has not finished outside the frame in all of his races. This is more competitive, but he should still progress and hit the frame again.

Solsbury Hill looks to be improving with every race and looks interesting here. Although failing to place in his first 4 starts, his last run of 2024, which saw him finish 4th of 15 at Limerick in December, showed his potential. He then returned from a break to win a maiden at Leopardstown in March and was then 3rd on handicap debut at Wexford two weeks later. He is just 1lb higher here and looks a good each way bet with 6 places on offer.

Has run consistently in 3 races over hurdles since joining this yard, placing twice, including when finishing 2nd last time. Holds an each-way chance on handicap debut.

A fair maiden on the flat, who showcased her talent by securing victory in her 3rd hurdle attempt, triumphed in a competitive 16-runner novice hurdle at Thurles just 47 days ago, demonstrating her potential. With the transition to handicapping, her chances of improvement are high, making the enticing 28/1 odds a worthwhile consideration for an each-way wager.

I can’t settle on anything concrete on this. I've been up and down on it all day. There are holes in everything I look at. I’m going to take a very speculative each-way poke on Stewart Crawford’s GREEN SKY (1st reserve). She’s only 5, so hopefully there’s more to come, but she ran well at Ayr last time out, finishing 2nd to one of Dan Skelton’s. That was a much-improved run from previous, and she might be on the upgrade. She was an 80 on the flat for Joseph O'Brien. Her best bit of flat form was being beaten by 6 lengths in the Irish Lincoln. JJ Slevin has stayed loyal. There are 6 places on offer. It’s super risky, but I’ll chuck a penny in the well.

Taking a bit of a punt here, but GOLD SPEED has the look of one that could find a bit of form after having a break. He is 2lb below last winning mark.
