Weather Betting For Business

In the UK we are obsessed with the weather partly because unlike many other countries it is so changeable. The cliche of 4 seasons in a day does actually happen, it can feel like Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter at any time of the year. Online Bookmakers know of this obsession and are starting to offer more betting markets on the weather in addition to the always-popular White Christmas odds.

For businesses, weather conditions can boost or adversely affect trade. Farmers, for example, need optimum conditions for different crops, for them, the weather is key to their livelihood. The UK tourism industry gains when the weather is good.

Some businesses do consider betting on the weather as a way of insurance. In a similar way, businesses and individuals can also use a weather derivative where they take out insurance or hedge on a catastrophic weather event, if that event happens then the seller of the derivative pays out. If nothing happens then the seller makes a profit.

USA Weather Betting

With the relaxation of gambling regulations in the USA each individual state now has the opportunity to decide on its own betting laws, and in such a big country the weather varies hugely from state to state.

USA Map

This has resulted in weather betting on individual cities within those states. You can now place bets on low and high temperatures and take on the meteorologists.

We normally cannot keep quiet about the weather - have your say below in the comments section.
