Originating from the Fifth Periodic Review of constituencies, Knowsley has distinguished itself for its Labour voting strength, securing one of the highest Labour vote shares and majorities in both national and its own history. It emerged as the safest Labour seat in terms of absolute votes in 2015 and again in 2017, when it recorded the largest majority by any MP post-universal suffrage, with Howarth achieving a 42,214 vote lead.

The constituency is characterized by its low-income demographic, residing mostly in social and former social housing, developed as part of post-WWII regeneration efforts. It includes areas like Huyton and Kirkby, with notable locations such as Knowsley Hall and Park. Identified as one of the UK's most deprived regions, Knowsley also voted in favor of Brexit in the 2016 EU referendum.
