Horse Racing Trainers To Follow In July

July Trainers

  • We move into the second half of the year carrying forward triple-figure profits (+£115.49).

  • Last July was our first blog after the Covid interruptions and it was a bit of a disaster, none of the figures really held up as we went with just NH trainers so I'm going to ignore last year's figures apart from the one trainer that gave +£61.00 LSP.

  • We will go back to the 2019 figures again and go with all the profitable trainers from July that year.

  • There will be 10 trainers in total and we will have an interest on both sides of the Irish Sea.

FLAT TURF GB

I will include the figures for 2020 but there will have less importance than normal due to covid and the differing schedules to usual.

HUGHIE MORRISON (4yo+)

Shrewd Berkshire trainer who usually goes well this month with his older horses.

  • 2015 2/12 17% +£9.00
  • 2016 4/19 21% +£7.25
  • 2017 4/16 25% +£10.50
  • 2018 2/9 22% +£2.25
  • 2019 3/18 17% +£3.00
  • 2020 3/12 25% +£11.83

Profit every year and interesting to see that continued even last year, just his older horses though as his record is not as good with the 2&3yo's.

RICHARD SPENCER (ALL)

Up and coming Newmarket trainer who has gone well in July in all but his first year training.

  • 2016     0/8     0%     (£8.00)
  • 2017     2/6    33%   +£22.00
  • 2018     7/21  33%   +£14.68
  • 2019     5/31  16%    +£  1.69
  • 2020     4/37  11%    +£16.50

Our own Early price figures where much better than the SP in 2019 and interesting that he also showed a LSP last year.

SIR MARK PRESCOTT (3YO's)

Very shrewd Newmarket trainer, probably doesn't have the quality of horse that he used to but a master when stepping horses up in trip, this is the month he usually gets his 3yo's going.

  • 2015     3/11     27%     (£4.72)
  • 2016     7/15     47%    +£18.51
  • 2017     3/14     21%     (£4.43)
  • 2018    16/27    59%    +£17.86
  • 2019     7/17     41%     +£11.67
  • 2020     8/18     44%     +£  2.44

Fantastic strike rate year on year with his 3yos and comes into the month 7/15 in June with a +£11 LSP.

GEORGE SCOTT (ALL)

Another Newmarket trainer wiith a similar profile to Spencer, the 118 rated James Garfield is probably his most notable runner to date.

  • 2016     4/18     22%     +£21.13
  • 2017     3/12     25%      (£ 5.33)
  • 2018     7/16     44%     +£ 3.11
  • 2019     4/21     19%      +£ 0.88
  • 2020     1/24       4%       (£21.38)

We're not going to worry about last year, I'm quite glad he didn't do well as I was starting to think we might have missed a trick last year.

MARK JOHNSTON (Glorious Goodwood)

A trainer we follow every year at Glorious Goodwood, the meeting is entirely in July this year which is nice.  I don't have the exact figures but we usually do well with him.  We made a small profit in 2019 +£2.50 and 5/39 but he went close with some big-priced horses.  Last year wasn't so good but the lack of owners attending may have influenced this as I know he usually targets the meeting for his owners.

Mark Johnston At Goodwood

I mentioned Mark Johnstone specifically targets this Goodwood meeting, do not forget to check if has two runners in the race.

GB AW

MARCO BOTTI (3yo's)

An AW blog regular, we have made a profit from his AW 3yo's in recent years.

  • 2015     2/9     22%     (£0.25)
  • 2016     1/3     33%    +£3.50
  • 2017     2/8     25%    +£3.50
  • 2018     2/7     29%    +£7.38
  • 2019     1/8     13%     +£7.00
  • 2020     1/3     33%    +£3.50

Won't keep us too busy but usually slots a couple of nice-priced winners in.

Marco Botti Hitting Form

The Italian-born trainer finished June 2021 with a host of winners, he is hitting form at exactly the right time for the blog.

GB NH

NEIL KING (ALL)

Wiltshire trainer who's stable star is still Lil Rockerfeller, usually goes well in July.

  • 2016     1/10     10%     +£5.00
  • 2017     0/1        0%      (£1.00)
  • 2018     3/14     21%     +£28.00
  • 2019     3/12     25%     +£10.88
  • 2020     3/11     27%     +£44.00

We had two of his winners at 60's and 12's and he also had four seconds so it was a fantastic month.

PETER BOWEN (ALL)

A trainer that usually makes hay while the sun shines.  He can normally be relied upon throughout the summer and his results in May and June have been really good.

  • 2017     7/29     24%    +£ 9.25
  • 2018    10/40    25%    +£56.53
  • 2019     5/32     16%      (£2.75)
  • 2020     0/39      0%      (£39.00)

I've just written off last year, lockdown clearly had a massive effect on the stable as he only had 2 winners between March and September, has done really well for us in June and no reason why that should change.  We made a +£2.60 profit in 2019 as well.

CHARLIE LONGSDON (ALL)

Has become a regular in July but we need an upturn in results this year if we are to continue with him.

  • 2015     2/9     22%     +£0.00
  • 2016     2/15   13%     +£3.00
  • 2017     4/15   27%     +£2.25
  • 2018     4/17   24%     +£20.00
  • 2019     1/14    7%      +£1.00
  • 2020     3/21    14%      (£6.50)

Not worried about last year and our own figures showed double the profit in 2019 so we'll give him another chance.

IRISH NH

WILLIE MULLINS (ALL) + GALWAY (1st August)

Had been the star of the show in recent July blogs, not so good last year but expect a big Galway which is almost all in July this year.

  • 2013 10/31 32% +£ 3.49
  • 2014 14/31 45% +£10.66
  • 2015 14/51 27% (£16.23)
  • 2016 18/44 41% +£12.54
  • 2017 16/43 37% +£4.72
  • 2018 20/39 51% +£25.37
  • 2019 8/27   30%  (£6.63)
  • 2020 10/42 24%   (£8.72)

Our own figures were almost level in 2019 and didn't include some Galway winners in August, I would advise following him throughout the festival.

IRISH FLAT

WILLIE MULLINS (ALL) + GALWAY (1st August)

Massive profits for Mullins on the flat in July 2019, most were at Galway but he did have success outside of the festival.

  • 2015 4/7 57% +£8.67
  • 2016 2/4 50% +£5.73
  • 2017 4/18 22% +£19.38
  • 2018 5/14 36% +£18.42
  • 2019 6/18 33%  +£8.39
  • 2020 1/14   7%   (£10.00)

Again I'm not too worried about last year as a lot of the festival was in August so wouldn't show in the 2020 figures.

I was close to putting Gavin Cromwell in the NH section as he did really well for us in 2019 but 2020 was horrendous and June this year was worse so I think he's too risky, it might be worth monitoring him at the start of the month though.

Please leave me any comments or questions below, I love receiving feedback on the blog and hope we can find some winners together!

26th - Bad start to the final week.     0/10     (£10.00)
