Historically, the seat has flipped between Labour and Conservative until Labour consistently won from 1974, with exceptions in 1981 and 2012. The 1997 election saw an unexpected swing towards the Conservatives, attributed to the Labour Party's selection of a Sikh candidate in a predominantly Muslim area. George Galloway won in 2012 for the Respect Party but lost to Shah in 2015, who has since achieved record vote shares, significantly in 2019 by 11.5%, marking Bradford West as the safest Labour seat in Yorkshire and the Humber.
