The constituency's boundaries will change following the 2023 Periodic Review of Westminster constituencies, resulting in the removal of Normanton. The constituency will be renamed Pontefract, Castleford and Knottingley and will contest its first election under this name at the subsequent general election.

The constituency was created due to the Fifth Periodic Review of Westminster constituencies, which recommended its formation for the 2010 general election within Wakefield's city district. Due to slower population growth, the commission had to reduce the number of constituencies in the county. This led to the amalgamation of Normanton and Pontefract/Castleford seats, with some wards transferred to neighboring constituencies to ensure the proper electorate size. The constituency name was chosen after several suggestions and public consultation.
