Controversial moments include racial remarks in the 1992 election and a 2000 attack on Liberal Democrat Nigel Jones and his assistant by a samurai sword-wielding man, resulting in Andrew Pennington's death. Conservatives regained the seat in 2015 after Liberal Democrats held it from 1992.
