Jeremy Hunt 4/1 favourite to be the next Conservative leader
Former foreign and health secretary Jeremy Hunt is the 4/1 favourite with bookmakers to take over from Boris Johnson next up.
Hunt sees himself as a more popular figure to Boris Johnson, according to newspaper reports, and this may help his campaign in becoming next leader.
Jeremy Hunt was the final opposition for Johnson back in 2019 in that leadership contest, so it may make sense that it's Hunt who takes over.
Next Conservative Leader | Odds | Probability |
---|---|---|
Jeremy Hunt | 4/1 | 20% |
Liz Truss | 6/1 | 14.3% |
Tom Tugendhat | 7/1 | 12.5% |
Penny Mordaunt | 9/1 | 10% |
Ben Wallace | 10/1 | 9.1% |
With just a 20% probability according to bookies, it's no certainty that Hunt takes over from Boris next, but the market is wide open from a betting standpoint.
Defence Secretary Ben Wallace is a surprise addition to the market, with a late charge for the hot spot potentially on the cards.
10/1 odds though suggests that he is a rank outsider when it comes to the likelihood of taking Boris Johnson's place, drifting from the 7/1 he was in our last report on the subject.
Liz Truss 6/1 second favourite to take over from Johnson next
Liz Truss has regularly been there or thereabouts in the betting market to be the next Conservative leader and remains at 6/1 to do so.
A December poll amongst Tory followers back in December had Truss as the popular favourite to take over next, but that doesn't always come across with MPs.
Despite campaigning for Remain back in 2016, Truss' late conversion for Brexit will have further increased her popularity in the party.
At odds of 6/1, Truss has a 14.3% chance of taking over in the betting market as the leader of the Conservatives.
Boris Johnson has 2/7 chance to win his no confidence vote
According to bookmaker odds, Boris Johnson has a high chance of winning his no confidence vote and remaining in his role.
With odds of 2/7 to win the no confidence vote expected on Monday evening, Johnson is set to get past another hurdle in his regime.
The BBC this morning have said that 18 of Johnson's 22 cabinet members will back the PM, which will be no surprise to anyone.
It's 5/2 that the no confidence vote will stick and Johnson will be ousted from the role, with around a 27% chance of that happening.
