  • 25/1 with bookies at the start of the year, Liz Truss is now just 4/1 to be next Tory leader
  • The Foreign Secretary has been snapped in a Tank just like Maggie Thatcher
  • Betting sites now have her 2nd Favourite ahead of Michael Gove
  • Rishi Sunak remains the clear 3/1 favourite

There has been support with bookmakers for Liz Truss' chance of becoming the next Conservative Party Leader throughout 2021 and this week she has gone ahead of Michael Gove in the betting.

The Foreign Secretary has been photographed in a military tank whilst in Latvia, just like former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in West Germany 35 years ago in 1986, bringing comparisons of the two women to the fore.

Channeling her inner 'Maggie', She was delivering her remarks at a meeting of Nato foreign ministers in Latvia, where they were considering how to respond to Russia's military buildup near the Ukrainian border and growing tensions along the Belarus-Poland border.

Next Conservative Party Leader Betting Odds

Odds Probability
Rishi Sunak 3/1 25%
Liz Truss 4/1 20%
Michael Gove 7/1 12.5%
Jeremy Hunt 10/1 9.09%
Sajid Javid 16/1 5.88%

The odds on Liz Truss becoming next prime minister have tanked forward in 2021, where she began the year as a 25/1 chance with bookmakers, but as we head toward 2022, she is now 4/1 second favorite behind Rishi Sunak.

Next General Election

When or if Liz Truss will become the Next Tory leader has some dependence on when Boris Johnson will leave or be removed from his post. We can speculate on whether this will be before or after the next general election and there is betting available

Boris Johnson to be Conservative leader at next general election

Odds Probability
Yes 1.65 (4/6) 60%
No 2.38 (11/8) 42%

**Odds probability include bookmakers overround edge - meaning percentages will add up to over 100%, this being the bookies edge - How bookmakers use odds

We can also speculate on when he may leave. The betting odds are quite close, but he is favoured to be top of the tree still when the next general election comes around as we see above so 2024 or later is the shortest price. So all Next Conservative leader betting will be affected by how confidence in Boris continues within the party.

The betting suggests it will be a waiting game to find out who the next Tory leader will be after Boris Johnson as bookmakers give him a 60% chance of still being in charge at the next General Election.
