HAPPY NEW YEAR, we enter the fifth year of the blog 2013 +£54.99 LSP 2014 +£45.67 LSP 2015 +£192.53 LSP, we finished 2016 on +£198.89 LSP. I'm learning all the time and this seems to be reflecting in the increased LSP in the last two years. We had a great January last year so plenty of returnees to hopefully set us off in the right direction in 2017.

NH (GB)

NICKY HENDERSON (HURDLERS) One of the few NH trainers that isn't back from last year, a blog regular who generally does better with his hurdlers in January.
2013 5/21 24% (£ 5.74)
2014 5/23 22% +£13.44
2015 14/35 40% +£10.09
2016 5/24 21% +£12.73
Strike rate above 20% always a plus, similar consistent figures in 3 of the 4 years.
PHILLIP HOBBS (ALL) Back from last month where he has shown a small profit to date. We are doing all his runners this month.
2013 5/41 12% (£24.43)
2014 15/49 31% +£25.21
2015 15/64 23% +£ 2.24
2016 15/52 29% +£ 2.78
Only a small LSP in the last two years but with 15 winners and BOG, we would expect a double figure profit with similar results.
ALAN KING (HURDLERS) Prominent trainer who hasn't appeared much in the blog, Yanworth and Smad Place are his stable stars. Comes into January in flying form.
2013 4/21 19% (£ 5.95)
2014 0/3 0% (£ 3.00)
2015 5/23 22% +£ 6.33
2016 9/26 35% +£22.28
Better figures in recent years is what we like to see and interestingly 36 of his last 41 winners have been hurdlers.
HARRY FRY (ALL) Rock On Ruby, Winner Champion Hurdle Another back from last year where he gave us a small loss
2013 3/6 50% +£13.75
2014 4/9 44% +£13.00
2015 6/16 38% +£ 8.60
2016 4/19 21% (£ 3.21)
Was in the blog with his hurdlers in December where he has provided a profit, with such a small loss last year deserves another chance.
SUE SMITH (ALL) Grand National winning trainer who is back from last years blog.
2012 0/18 0% (£18.00)
2013 2/11 18% (£ 3.33)
2014 10/40 25% +£27.28
2015 8/32 25% +£31.25
2016 4/22 18% +£ 7.00
Our own figures with BOG last year were +£11.50 and there are signs she is coming into form with a +LSP in December.
MALCOLM JEFFERSON (ALL) One of the stars of last January where he gave us +£23 LSP.
2011 4/24 17% +£10.50
2012 3/17 18% +£ 4.50
2013 2/8 25% +£ 4.50
2014 8/28 29% +£ 9.38
2015 1/9 11% (£1.50)
2016 3/11 27% +£20.00
Comes into the month with a 27% strike rate in December, should provide a useful addition to the January squad.
NICKY RICHARDS (ALL) Blog favourite with a similar profile to Jefferson, like Jefferson will have plenty of runners in the north, his best figures come at the likes of Hexham, Carlisle, Kelso and Perth.
2013 2/14 14% (£ 8.75)
2014 4/11 36% +£10.50
2015 6/17 35% +£ 8.47
2016 4/19 21% +£ 4.25
Solid stuff in the last three years and has had a good December.
BEN PAULING (ALL) A trainer who gave us plenty of Christmas cheer last month, has had fantastic figures in the winter months in each of the last two years.
2014 0/8 0% (£ 8.00)
2015 6/23 26% +£10.38
2016 6/15 40% +£13.10
A repeat of any of the past two years will suffice.
SEAMUS MULLINS (ALL) Wiltshire trainer who was first introduced to the blog last January.
2012 3/26 12% +£ 3.00
2013 2/11 11% +£28.00
2014 4/17 24% +£30.00
2015 6/29 21% +£11.83
2016 1/13 8% +£21.00
Was a little disappointing last year then he had a 33/1 winner in the last week. Would like to see a better strike rate this year.
JOHN QUINN (HURDLERS) Wetherby OLBG Mares Hurdle 2013 Winner Cockney Sparrow North Yorkshire trainer who is equally adept on flat and national hunt, he has provided us with some classy hurdlers in recent years Recession Proof, Cockney Sparrow (pictured left) and Countrywide Flame to name but three. It's his hurdlers we are looking at this month.
2011 2/9 22% (£ 0.50)
2012 1/7 14% +£ 1.00
2013 1/3 33% +£12.00
2014 3/10 30% +£ 7.30
2015 2/11 18% +£ 0.50
2016 1/3 33% +£ 0.25
Back from last year with a small profit. Not many runners but not much risk attached either.
AW STUART WILLIAMS (ALL) This is the third time he has appeared in the January blog, did really well for us last year.
2011 4/14 29% +£ 3.18
2012 5/23 22% +£25.33
2013 6/23 26% (£ 5.34)
2014 5/20 25% +£ 1.50
2015 6/31 19% (£ 7.92)
2016 13/40 33% +£29.41
Our own figures for last year were +£47 so make use of BOG and BOG+ as his horses often are backed.
DAVID SIMCOCK (ALL) Suffolk trainer who is back from last year, has a really good record on the AW, his record in January is particularly of note.
2011 4/24 17% +£ 4.57
2012 2/17 12% (£ 6.50)
2013 8/22 36% +£ 6.07
2014 11/37 30% +£49.63
2015 2/15 13% +£ 4.00
2016 14/44 32% +£18.53
A little dip in 2015 but back with a bang last year, our own BOG figures were almost 5 points higher which is what you would expect with 14 winners.
SIR MARK PRESCOTT (ALL) Not a trainer I particularly associate with winter AW winners but his recent figures are quite surprising.
2013 0/2 0% (£ 2.00)
2014 1/13 8% (£ 9.50)
2015 7/13 54% +£28.25
2016 5/14 36% (£ 0.75)
Awesome strike rate in the last two years and would have made a profit using BOG last year.
Only one nearly man this month, K Burke was 25% and +£82.50 last January but prior to that his figures didn't quite hold up. He's one to keep our eye on for next year.
For anyone new to the blog we won't win every day or every month, I'd like to think we will win in the long term. Use the blog to supplement your own ideas and read the blogs of other members like Meoldmate and Robmull, our blogs often overlap and throw up some nice winners.
Thanks for all the comments last month it was great to get the feedback. As always any questions, observations of comments are all welcome. Good luck.
