Initially a Conservative seat, its political landscape underwent significant changes, notably briefly switching to the SDP in the early-1980s due to defections but was reclaimed by Labour in 1983. Since 1997, minor parties have occasionally outperformed major ones here, with the Liberals finishing second in 1997 and 2001. Renowned MPs include Sir F E Smith and David Maxwell Fyfe, both achieving high legal offices. Stephen Twigg, notable for a historic win in 1997, represented the area after 2005.
