Historically a competitive area, Labour's dominance solidified during the 1980s, with the Conservative party's influence waning. Prominent Labour figures like Eric Heffer and Peter Kilfoyle have previously held the seat. Liverpool Walton notably displayed the largest Labour majority in 2010 and 2015, with Steve Rotheram achieving the highest vote share in the latter since 1997. In 2015, it was the only English constituency where a Conservative candidate lost their deposit. Rotheram transitioned to Mayor of Liverpool City Region in 2017, leading to Carden's election with the nation's highest Labour vote share.
