Horse Racing Trainers To Follow In August

Horse Racing Trainers To Follow In August

August Trainers

We carried our success in June onto July and now stand at +£132.35 LSP for the year, August was a profitable month last year, we'll be taking 4 trainers from last August and some new additions, most are turf trainers in GB this month and with plenty of meetings to go at it will be a busy old time.

FLAT TURF GB

KEVIN RYAN (ALL)

North Yorkshire trainer who will target the Ebor festival this month.  He provided +£24 LSP last year and was our second best trainer.

  • 2017     20/107     19%     +£ 7.01
  • 2018     10/83       12%     (£31.75)
  • 2019     16/71       23%    +£37.32
  • 2020     10/71       14%    +£36.71
  • 2021     15/85       18%     (£3.05)

Slightly better strike rate last year and we had a 5/2 winner not included above as it was demoted in a Stewards Equiry but we got paid so it's in our figure.  The rest of the 20 point difference was made from early price gains, 20 points on 15 winners is massive, get on early.

WILLIE MUIR & CHRIS GRASSICK (ALL)

Lambourn trainer who returns for a 7th year to the August blog, he was the top performer last year with +£28.75 LSP

  • 2013 9/33 27% +£40.25
  • 2014 7/34 21% +£17.00
  • 2015 7/36 19% (£ 4.25)
  • 2016 5/30 17% (£ 5.95)
  • 2017 4/38 11% (£5.50)
  • 2018 5/25 20% (£1.30)
  • 2019 5/26 19% +£11.75
  • 2020 4/18 22% +£20.50
  • 2021 7/29 24%  +£16.00

Again we added +£12.00 the the SP profit using early prices.  The star of the blog last 2 years, we managed +£27.80 LSP in 2020 using early prices.  We also made a profit with him in 2018 and 2019, get on his horses early because they are often gambled.

DAVID MENUISIER (ALL)

Sussex trainer back for a fifth year, his figures wern't as spectalular as the previous two returnee's but was solid again.

  • 2014 1/3 33% +£0.75
  • 2015 1/5 20% +£4.00
  • 2016 3/14 21% +£11.00
  • 2017 3/14 21% +£29.50
  • 2018 2/13 15% (£1.25)
  • 2019 4/17 24% +£24.50
  • 2020 3/14 21%  +£ 0.30
  • 2021 4/21 19%  +£2.00

We doubled the SP profit last year and he comes into the month on the back of a Goodwood winner.

CHARLIE APPLEBY (2&3yo's)

Top of the trainers list and becoming a blog regular, at first look his figures weren't that impressive but take his older horses out and it's another solid set.

  • 2017     12/39     31%     +£3.56
  • 2018       6/23     26%     +£7.35
  • 2019       7/31     23%     (£17.81)
  • 2020       9/24     38%     +£8.46
  • 2021     11/27     41%     +£1.15

Unbelievable strike rate and EP gains are more forthcoming with Appleby than many of the top trainers as he often goes in with second and third strings at decent prices.

JOHN & THADY GOSDEN (ALL)

Blog regular and after a dip in August in recent years he was back with a bang last 2 years.

  • 2013     19/62     31%     +£32.45
  • 2014     13/43     30%     +£23.20
  • 2015      8/43      19%     +£16.56
  • 2016     11/36     31%     +£10.87
  • 2017     11/51     22%      (£  0.83)
  • 2018     13/54     24%      (£  5.67)
  • 2019     13/59     22%      (£19.64)
  • 2020     14/54     26%     +£18.62
  • 2021     13/52     25%     +£ 5.15

Figures don't get much more consistent and of the three losing years, realistically only 2019 would have been a loss using EP.

ANDREW BALDING (2yo's)

Another who I nearly overlooked on his total figures but his 2yo's warrant attention.

  • 2016     6/17     35%     +£9.25
  • 2017     3/21     14%     +£3.06
  • 2018     8/40     20%     +£14.20
  • 2019     3/23     13%      (£11.75)
  • 2020     6/31     19%     +£0.73
  • 2021     9/36     25%     +10.46

Again it's only really a repeat of 2019 we need to avoid, otherwise it should be profit all the way.

WILLIAM HAGGAS (3yo's)

A trainer who has been in flying form this season, will target the Ebor meeting, it's his 3yo's we are interested in this month.

  • 2014     9/38     24%     +£11.09
  • 2015     8/33     24%     +£  0.83
  • 2016    13/40    33%      (£  7.41)
  • 2017    13/38    34%     +£11.33
  • 2018     6/32     19%      (£10.75)
  • 2019    12/44    27%      (£  1.61)
  • 2020    10/44    23%      (£10.49)
  • 2021    19/46    41%     +£15.14

Three losing years between 2018 - 2020 might look risky on the face of it but 2019 would almost certainly be decent profit using EP from 12 winners and 2020 losses could easily be halved of more.  I think he's a must for inclusion.

TIM EASTERBY (4yo+)

North Yorkshire trainer who is definitely on the up and another who will have York on his radar.   Just his older horses this month.

  • 2017     9/67     13%     +£22.00
  • 2018     7/74      9%       (£30.42)
  • 2019    12/121  10%     +£24.38
  • 2020    16/91    18%     +£29.71
  • 2021    14/120  12%       (£ 4.29)

This is the risky one of the month but we've had lots of success with trainers of a similar profile throughout the summer, he offers massive EP/Exchange gains when betting win only as we do, his horses will have much higher prices on the exchanges giving potentially massive gains.  Even on SP figures we would have had a profit in 3 of 5 years despite the poor strike rate but last year would have been profit using EP on 14 winners.

Not for everyone but one for me.

GB NH

NEIL MULHOLLAND (ALL)

Wiltshire trainer and our only non GB turf trainer this month.

  • 2016     6/30     20%     +£ 2.31
  • 2017     7/30     23%     (£ 0.70)
  • 2018     5/29     17%      (£ 6.38)
  • 2019     2/15       8%     +£13.00
  • 2020     7/42      17%    +£18.33
  • 2021     4/15      27%   +£17.38

I must have missed one of his winners last year as our own figures are slightly worse but I only have 3, either way a bit of interest on the NH and likely profit.

As always any questions, observation, comments leave below, I'm on holiday for 1 week (maybe 2) in August so updates may be a bit sporadic.

Good Luck!

3rd - Blank day, Ryan went really close with an 11/1 shot.     0/8     (£8.00)

6th - Haggas double at Ascot and nice Muir winner helped towards an almost level day.     5/23     (£1.20)

17th - Funny isn't it all those losses wiped put in one day.  25's winner for Ryan at York, winners for Balding, Easterday and Haggas then our last runner won at 20's for Mulholland.  Back in front for the month.     6/21     +£44.75

18th - With four races and six runners left we were looking at a big loss with 14 losers in the afternoon then winners from Mulholland and Easterby gave us respectability, then again Mulholland struck in the last....bet at 22's, won at 15/2!!!!!     3/20     +£13.33

19th - Mulholland coundn't bail us out today, loads of runners and despite 5 winners they were all too short to get near a profit.     5/39     (£24.07)

20th - We bagged the Ebor winner at 14's and 4 others, I thought we had a 11's winner at night but it was a DH so half the profit I thought we had.     5/28     +£2.28

22nd - Quiet Monday, two losers.     0/2     (£2.00)

23rd - Mulholland winner, not enough for profit.     1/6     (£1.67)

24th - Catterick's abandonment meant our Easterby winner was enough for a profitable day.     1/2     +£1.83

25th - A Muir double at Ffos gave us the same profit as yesterday.     2/11     +£1.83

26th - Another horrendous Friday, just two short ones from loads of runners.     2/30     (£25.12)

27th - Not quite as bad today but still a loss.     2/20     (£9.35)

28th - Virtually level after winners for Balding and Easterby.     2/8     (£0.32)

29th - Dead day just when we don't want it.     0/9     (£9.00)

30th - The month is going out in a damp squib.     2/10     (£5.60)

31st - Mulholland winner got us almost level for the day.     1/8     (£1.00)

Monthly Total      64/392     (£63.25)

Yearly Total     342/2029     +£69.10
