Constituency Information

Clacton, a coastal constituency in Essex, UK, has been represented by Conservative Giles Watling since 2017. It includes seaside resorts like Clacton-on-Sea, Frinton-on-Sea, and Walton-on-the-Naze, sharing an inland border with Harwich and North Essex.

Known for one of the oldest electorates in the country, it has many retired residents, few non-White residents, and many White British families from East London. Jaywick, part of Clacton, is the most deprived area in England due to high unemployment and poor living conditions, receiving attention from the UN for its extreme poverty.

The constituency, formed in 2010 from the Harwich constituency minus Harwich itself, first elected Douglas Carswell. Carswell, after defecting to the UK Independence Party (UKIP) and winning a subsequent by-election, became UKIP’s first elected MP. However, in 2017, Carswell left UKIP, did not run for re-election, and Giles Watling won the seat for the Conservatives.
