Byrne succeeded Terry Davis, who had represented the area since 1983, following the seat's creation from much of the abolished Birmingham Stechford. The 2004 by-election, prompted by Davis's departure for a Council of Europe role, was narrowly won by Labour, making it one of the party's safest seats by 2015.
