He was thought good enough to run at both the Cheltenham and Aintree Festivals, finishing 6/21 in big field handicaps. He also seems to like Killarney, finishing 2-5-2 in three attempts and hasn't been sent off bigger than 7-2. Black Bamboo is ground versatile and won over today's trip and stays further. He should prove to be a significant threat off a mark of 120 with Tom Harney's 7lb conditional claim.

Ran well in 4th last time, having made his effort out wider than ideal. His move into contention meant he had little left at the business end of the race, where he faded. Not missed by the handicapper, though, who nudges him up 3lb. Needs to improve to win, but should come on for that last run.

POPOVA was aimed at a Cheltenham festival as a fresh mare last year and similarly she takes her chance following a spell on the sidelines today. There is evidence she is best when fresh potentially even at this time of year , and from the HDB trained entries this is the choice of Rachael Blackmore. Better treated than many she appeals.

If you forgive his last run, Eoin Griffin’s 8 year old gelding NAVIGATOR JACK doesn’t look out of place here off bottom weight especially at current odds of 28/1. A son of GAME AND GLORY, he has the toughness you’d expect and has shown glimpses of ability despite a patchy recent record. Two starts ago at Killarney (20f, good), he produced what I thought was an admirable effort when falling at the last. Yes, he may have been fading, but he’d raced with the leader from four out - and that came after a 323-day layoff. More than acceptable, in my view. A month later, he was pitched into deeper waters and wasn’t disgraced just missing the frame by half a length in a race stacked with horses who’ve gone on to much better things. All his best form has come on sharp, left-handed tracks over this trip, and his last win came off a mark of 102. With Ethan O’Sullivan taking off 7lbs, he runs here effectively off 99. The trainer has a 33.33% place strike rate with horses returning from breaks and is 100% in the frame over the past month. I’ve backed worse 28/1 shots.
