2022 World Seniors Darts Championship Top Contenders

Phil 'The Power' Taylor

It really is no surprise to see Taylor as the bookies favourite to land this event, the sixty-one-year-old is a former sixteen times World Champion and a founding member of the PDC has a long list of honours which includes 16 World Championships, 16 World Matchplay, 11 World Grand Prix, 6 Grand Slams, 6 Premier Leagues and many more too!

The Power started in the BDO way back in 1987 and was a professional all the way to 2018, a career spanning over 30 years which ended with a 7-2 defeat to Rob Cross in the PDC World Champion final with Taylor saying that he no longer had the energy to compete with the like of Cross and MvG.

Robert 'The Thorn' Thornton

Seven years younger than Taylor is the bookies second favourite, the Scot, Robert Thornton. After spending a good twenty years out of the game to raise his family, Thornton spent four years with the BDO before joining the PDC in 2008 where he is still an active player, one advantage that he does have over Taylor with competitive matches.

Thornton's list of achievements is slim though, he did win the 2007 BDO World Masters and when with the PDC he won the 2012 UK Open as well as the 2015 World Grand Prix. He was the third player to ever hit a 9-darter from a double-start at the World World Prix in 2014 and in the same year became the first player along with James Wade for a match to feature 9-darters from both players.

World Seniors Darts Championship Players

In total there are twenty-four players who will compete in the 2022 World Seniors Darts Championship, these feature twelve former PDC and BDO World Champions as well as ten invited players and two spots for players who won either of the two qualifying events which took place at the Crucible club in Reading back in November of last year. Ted Hankey, Richie Burnett and Kevin Burness all held entries but all in the build-up withdraw from the tournament.
