20+ years in the gambling industry including 13+ years playing and reviewing slots.
Nolimit City slots are loved by avid slot players and are a popular choice at UK slot sites. Games such as Tombstone RIP, San Quentin, Fire in the Hole and Serial are amongst the most played online.
Head of Product at Nolimit City, Per Lindheimer, sat down with OLBG’s very own Chris Taylor for a generic interview which looks at how slot games are created and what the ideation process is like and what are their most popular slots. They also discuss slot sequels and future plans.
Q: How has 2024 gone for Nolimit City so far?
PL: “It’s been awesome. We’ve had some smashing titles and we’ve finally moved into making proper sequels. Diving back into old loved ones like Punk Rocker and San Quentin is always daunting and fun. Fire in the Hole 2 was a dead given, and it was also a little easier when we’ve already done follow-ups like Misery Mining and Dead Canary. These titles have been very good to us - but our new titles have been very well received in the slots community as well. Something new, something familiar and something really crazy (looking at you Ken…).”
Q: How are new slot games created? What’s the process? Does the team search the dark web for twisted themes/ideas?
PL: “We’ve got three legs that fall in the games portfolio of Nolimit City - Labs, classic Nolimit City and also Over the Limit. They’re all Nolimit City of course, but they’re created to give the player and also the casino a hunch of what to expect. Over the Limit is the craziest of the crazy, like Kenneth Must Die or Mental. Provocative themes, high max exposures and games where we try to push the boundaries.
Then we’ve got the classic Nolimit City - games which are more catered to being familiar with what we’ve done in the past, but of course with new shit every time - we just don’t make it way off the scales with max exposure or brand new mechanics which no-one has seen before.
We’ve also got Labs, which is where we can do some new sh*t - but within the Nolimit aura, but mechanics can be quite new and off, and we’re a bit more loose in terms of choice of theme at times, but it’s mainly aimed at wicked mechanics.
We try to push ourselves and remind each other that we want to do something new and unique for our games - regardless of what bracket they fall into. Ideas come from anywhere - in a discussion with a colleague, from brainstorming fun game names or just inspiration that pops up when you watch a movie or TV series. Most games - theme or mechanics - are just a seed in the beginning, and then the team helps form it to its finished product.”
Q: What are Nolimit City’s most popular slot games? Are there any that are particularly popular only in the UK?
PL: “There’s a bunch of them that keep fighting for the top spot - but Mental is an old classic that continues to be very popular. Fire in the Hole and Fire in the Hole 2 are also very popular, fun to see the uptake on the new sequel of course. A surprising one might be The Crypt, which has a huge following in specific markets and the amount of rounds on that one is amazing. It doesn’t get as much time in the spotlight as the other titles I’ve mentioned above.
UK isn’t that different from any other market to be honest: even these poor sods can’t use our bonus buys. Mental, Fire in the Hole 1 & 2, xWays Hoarder - and of course Punk Rocker 2 was very well received, even though it moved the theme from London to New York…”
Q: What % of players play on mobile vs desktop devices?
PL: “Depends on what market, but it’s a fair assessment to say about 75% mobile and 25% desktop. UK is even higher than 75% on mobile, probably around 85+%. Mobile is very strong in most markets, there’s not many that have more action on desktop than mobile..”
Q: With slot sequels trending, what sequels can we expect in future?
PL: “Well, next up is San Quentin 2: Death Row and also Blood & Shadow 2 - two popular titles in the UK as well. San Quentin is a game which screams Nolimit City and Blood and Shadow is a very different type of game from what we usually do - but the difference between them is what makes it fun to produce games. You’ll see some more sequels in 2025, but I’ll keep that under wraps for a few more months. Is there any specific title you’d like to see?.”
CT: “Thanks for the insight. San Quentin 2 will surely pique the interest of many players because the first game was such a hit. I’d love to see a Kenneth Must Die sequel as I’d be keen to see how far NLC can push the theme/story.”
Q: NLC offers somewhat controversial themes/graphics. Is this because players’ needs have changed over the years?
PL: “It’s what we wanna do. And also what’s been very well received by the players of course. We always take a lot of inspiration from pop culture and we wanna make slot games for an adult audience - I don’t think it’s very controversial in that sense. We love doing more fun stuff with the themes than the standard (and boring) themes like Egypt and Fruits. It’s just not us.”
Q: Will NLC create a slot game with bigger win potential than Tombstone RIP?
PL: “Yes.”
Q: What is your favourite xMechanic and why?
PL: “xNudge. Potent, fun - always makes my heart run when I hit it. It brings potential, high hit rates and takes down the pace in a fun way when we animate it.”
Q: What Nolimit City slot are you proudest of and why?
PL: “Can’t say all of them, that’s for sure. I’ve got a number of slots which I’ve got a soft spot for - so I’ll bring up a new one that I usually don’t mention that often - it’s xWays Hoarder xSplit. A very fun game to play!”
Q: What challenges does Nolimit City face with regard to regulation in the UK?
PL: “Tons. We’re used to challenges with regulations, and there are a few things I do not agree with in this jurisdiction that they deem is in the player's best interest. My biggest concern is always that these games are made for an audience of 18+, and it’s always very much closed down in these regulated markets for anyone below that age to be able to play - but why o’ why are non-adult themes ok, but more badass themes not allowed?! Why is a funny-looking dog or a colourful candy bar more ok than an immature joke?”
Q: What can we expect from Nolimit City for the rest of the year and beyond?
PL: “Tons. We’ll continue with our weird ideas and games but will sprinkle it with some highly anticipated sequels. We’re on a high right now and will work hard to keep it that way. Hopefully, we can make games that the players like and recognise. I’m far from done!”
