Who Could Be The Next Milton Keynes Dons Manager
A list of the potential candidates should the job become available today based on previous people appearing in the betting odds when the position was vacant last time, to others who have a profile that would fit the club in terms of the last few managers they have had.
Gary Caldwell
Gary Caldwell has been the Exeter City manager since October 2022.
In both seasons the club has finished mid table.
If given the MKD position Caldwell would be managing his 5th club after previous spells at Wigan Athletic, Chesterfield and Partick Thistle.
Karl Robinson
The former MK Dons, Charlton Athletic and Oxford United manager Karl Robinson has built a solid reputation from all the clubs that he has managed.
So far, the pinnacle of his achievements was getting Milton Keynes Dons promoted into the Championship in 2015.
Playing in the Championship was a big step for MKD, and they soon returned to League 1. In October 2016, Robinson was sacked.
A month later, he was back in football at Charlton Athletic, where he stayed for 18 months before moving to Oxford United. Robinson spent nearly five years at the U's, achieved two playoff appearances and managed 274 games before being sacked in February 2023.
When out of work, he is a go-to candidate in English football; he was 1/1 to be appointed at QPR in 2023 before Gareth Ainsworth.
Robinson was the second favourite (2/1 -7/1) for the MKD vacancy when Graham Alexander was sacked.
He built his reputation at Lincoln City between 2016 and 2019, winning promotion to the Football League in his first season with the Imps.
The 2018-19 season saw a further promotion for Cowley and Lincoln into the dizzying heights of League 1.
This success naturally attracted more prominent suitors, but since then, he has disappointed at Huddersfield and Portsmouth.
Milton Keynes Dons looked a good fit when Alexander left, and his odds of around 5/1 indicated that his name was in the frame for the position.
Steve Cotterill
Another manager who regularly features in Leagues 1 and 2 managerial vacancies.
Steve Cotterill built his managerial reputation at Cheltenham Town, guiding the club from the Southern League into the Conference and then the Football League proper.
You can see by the stats his best period was at cash-strapped Notts County, where he took over in February 2010 and saw the club crowned Champions in April 2010.
Cotterill has now managed a host of clubs with varying degrees of success.
David Artell
David Artell left Crewe Alexandra in April 2022. He started his managerial career with Railwaymen and won promotion from League 2 in 2020 and was the Divisions Manager of the Year.
In November 2023 he was named the new Grimsby Town boss.
