FA Cup Final Statistics - Going the Distance

Since the 2000 FA Cup, the chance of a replay was abolished, prior to that a draw would result in a replay and the move to take out the replay was taken from 2000 onwards.

Since then only 6 of the 24 finals finished in a draw at full-time, three of those were decided in extra-time whilst the other three were decided on penalties.

Liverpool won on penalties in the 2022 final, however, that was the first final to go to penalties since 2006 when it was again Liverpool winning in the shootout.

FA Cup Final Statistics - Goals

On average since 2000, the final has seen 2.21 goals per game for ninety minutes, this does not include goals scored in extra time.

From the 24 finals, the winning margin has more often than not been close, only 4 finals saw the winning side win by two or more goals.

The split for over or under 2.5 goals has gotten a lot closer thanks to results in recent rules, for those 24 finals, 13 ended with under 2.5 goals whilst 11 have finished with over.

In more recent times as stated things have got closer with 6 of the last 10 finals after going over 2.5 goals. Only 4 of the 24 finals have gone over 3.5 goals.

  • 20 of the 24 finals finished with under 3.5 goals
  • 15 of the 24 finals finished with a nil in the scoreline

FA Cup Final Statistics - Most Successful Teams

In terms of which team has made it to the most finals, that would be both Arsenal and Manchester United who have both featured in 21 finals, United's final appearance in 2023 drew them level with the Gunners.

With those teams making the most finals, it is, therefore, no surprise they top the winners list too, Arsenal the most successful having lifted the cup fourteen times compared to United twelve times.

With eight wins are Chelsea (16 finals), Liverpool (15 finals) and Tottenham (9 finals) whilst following their success in 2023, Manchester City (12 finals) have now drawn level with Aston Villa (11 finals) on seven wins.

  • Arsenal are the most successful team with 14 FA Cup wins
  • Manchester United are the only other team with 10+ wins (12)

2023-24 FA Cup Final Preview

The 2023-24 FA Cup Final will take place on the 25th of May and will feature a Manchester Derby with United and City making their way into the final.

This will be the second consecutive final to feature the Manchester teams, last season City came out on top in a 2-1 victory thanks to a brace from İlkay Gündoğan.

That was City's seventh FA Cup success, they are still well behind United who have twelve wins, their last came in 2016 when beating Palace after extra time.

The all-time Manchester Derby record stands at 78 wins for United, 61 for City and 53 ending in a draw, however, it is much closer when looking at cup meetings.

From 22 games it is still United who leads with 12 wins but not as far ahead with City winning 9 and only 1 game ending in a draw and City have won 3 of the last 4.
