Writer, analyst, podcaster, Spurs fan. Three out of four is not bad. If there is a data angle, I will find it.
There are many traditions when it comes to watching any football game, and the most notable ones occur before kick-off. The purchase of a programme from a street vendor, some food from your favourite cafe, getting your bets on with your bookmakers and perhaps most importantly, a pint or two discussing what might happen later that afternoon.
Lager, cider, or even an ale—568ml of liquid football knowledge is essential for some before watching any of this season's 20 Premier League clubs in action. For those who do not like to travel much, we have researched the nearest pubs to each of the current 20 top-flight homes.
🏟️🍺 Kick-off Rituals: Fuel Your Football Fervor! ⚽
Who has to travel the furthest for their nearest pint, and who can fall out of one door and into their favourite stadium? The answers to this and a lot more are revealed below.

Liverpool | Anfield | The Arkles | 0.2 miles |

Brentford | Gtech Community Stadium | The Griffin | 0.5 miles |
Crystal Palace | Selhurst Park | The Clifton Arms | 0.5 miles |

Wolverhampton Wanderers | Molineux | The Royal Oak | 0.5 miles |
Aston Villa tops the table for the nearest pub to Premier League ground. The West Midlands-based outfit has just a 0.1-mile distance between its Villa Park ground and The Villa Tavern.
This proximity encapsulates the relationship between football and local businesses in Birmingham, where venues like The Villa Tavern serve as vital extensions of the matchday atmosphere and allow football fans to get fueled up before cheering Unai Emery's men for 90 minutes.
🍻🏟️ Aston Villa Tops Pub Proximity! ⚽
Sharing second place are seven clubs with pubs located 0.2 miles from their respective stadiums, including iconic venues such as The Strawberry near Newcastle United’s St James’ Park and The Arkles close to Liverpool’s Anfield. Both pubs are deeply ingrained in their clubs’ cultures, acting as pre-match gathering spots and hubs of fan activity.
Similarly, London teams such as Chelsea and West Ham benefit from their proximity to The Chelsea Pensioner and The Cow, respectively, reflecting the accessibility afforded by metropolitan settings.
🍻⚽ Pub Pros Close to the Pitch! 🏟️
Further down the table, clubs like Arsenal, Everton, and Tottenham Hotspur enjoy 0.3-mile proximity to venues like The Tollington, The Winslow, and The Bricklayers Arms. These slightly longer distances are still walkable and allow fans to immerse themselves in football traditions before and after games.
However, clubs such as Bournemouth and Southampton, whose nearest pubs are 0.4 miles away, highlight a subtle shift towards more suburban stadium settings where housing sits closer to the ground than the examples listed above.
At the lower end of the distance table, Wolves, Leicester City, and Manchester City share the maximum distance of 0.5 miles to their nearest pubs. While this is still within a reasonable walking range, the further distance may dampen the spontaneity of pre-match pub visits.
Especially when looking at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium. The location of the stadium reflects the challenges of a redeveloped and relatively isolated venue in creating the necessary social infrastructure before football matches and as a consequence the atmosphere at this ground has been known to suffer.
Then again, the fact that each of these 20 clubs all have a pub within 0.5 miles of their ground is not to be unexpected and a better way to highlight the relationship between pub and ground may be to see how many public houses sit within a one mile radius of each ground.

In this table, we can see that Newcastle is the undisputed Premier League leader, and it is no surprise that travelling fans rate this as one of, if not the best, away days in the division.
This unofficial award is because the Magpies can command a whopping 174 pubs within a mile of St James' Park - more than treble than Wolves' 50 pubs that were good enough to rank second in the table.
🏆🍻 Newcastle: Premier League's Pub Paradise! ⚽
More importantly, most of these 174 pubs have no restrictions regarding away supporters being made welcome. Unlike other clubs in the Premier League, which turn away visitors and supporters from established local pubs, this is certainly not the case in Tyneside.
As mentioned, it is Wolves who find themselves second in the table. Although they may have to travel further for their nearest pub, supporters are rewarded with plenty more choice once they walk for at least 0.5 miles away from Molineux.
50 pubs in the vicinity of Molineux and 33 in the area of Arsenal's Emirates Stadium, and this number is enough to place the Gunners third in the pub radius league standings and the highest ranked of the seven London-based clubs in this season's edition of the competition.
🍻🏟️ Pubs Galore: Wolves & Arsenal Stand Tall! ⚽
While promoted outfit Ipswich have seemingly been welcomed to the Premier League with all arms open, not only because of the football they aim to play but because there are 29 pubs within a mile of Portman Road.
The Tractor Boys fans may want to leave their tractor at home with so much potential drinking to do and their 29 pubs just edges out Chelsea into fifth as there are 27 within a mile of Stamford Bridge.
At the other end of the table is a position where Manchester City would not usually find themselves and this is due to their only being two pubs within a mile of the Etihad.
Not much ability to have a pint before watching Pep Guardiola's men and the same can be said for league counterparts who only have three pubs within a mile of The Amex.
🍺🔍 Pub Shortage for Man City & Brighton Fans! ⚽
However, this does come with the caveat that you need to catch another train after coming into Brighton and if you are willing to drink there before going to the ground, there are plenty more options available for travelling fans.
Just three within a mile of Brighton's Falmer location and this is just a single pub less than the four that are available at St Mary's if you fancy a pint before going to watch Southampton
While although there are plenty of options when it comes to Chelsea, their West London rivals do not fare as well with both Brentford and Fulham having only six pubs within a mile radius.
But what of the Premier League's powerhouses that have not been mentioned, what about the remaining members of the 'big six'
If you are a Liverpool fan, there are 25 pubs within a mile. A Manchester United supporter is served by just seven by comparison and a follower of Tottenham has 20 to call in on.
Last Orders Please
The findings reveal a strong correlation between urban stadium locations and higher pub densities, reinforcing the notion that football is deeply embedded in city life.
Clubs like Newcastle, Chelsea, and Arsenal highlight this integration, where fans can easily transition from pubs to the stadium.
However, clubs in suburban or redeveloped areas often have fewer options, potentially impacting the overall fan experience.
🍺⚽️ City Stadiums Score Big with Pub Proximity! 🍻🏟️
The proximity of pubs to stadiums plays a vital role in shaping matchday traditions. Venues like The Strawberry in Newcastle and The Arkles in Liverpool are not just places to drink but cultural landmarks that embody the spirit of the club. Because of this, these pubs’ roles extend beyond convenience, acting as spaces where fans forge connections and celebrate their shared passion for football.
On the other hand, stadiums with lower pub densities or greater distances to the nearest pubs may face challenges in creating a similarly vibrant matchday culture.
For example, Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium, despite its modern facilities, lacks the surrounding social infrastructure that defines the fan experience at more centrally located grounds.
These clubs such as Manchester City might explore initiatives like food and drink festivals, fan zones, or enhanced stadium amenities to bridge the gap but even with this, it is simply not the same as dropping in for a quick pre-match pint just around the corner of the ground.
Methodology
The proximity data for the nearest pubs to Premier League stadiums was gathered using publicly available mapping services, including Google Maps and OpenStreetMap. Pub names and distances were confirmed through cross-referencing with club-specific fan guides, local business directories, and social media platforms that document popular matchday spots. The table includes the following information for all 20 Premier League clubs:
For the density analysis, pubs within a one-mile radius of each stadium were counted using OpenStreetMap and local pub directories. Special attention was paid to exclude duplicate entries and non-pub establishments such as restaurants or cafes.
