Every year, the Brit Award for the Best British Album is handed out by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI). This organization works with record companies and artists all over the UK. The award is a big part of the Brit Awards ceremony, which celebrates the best of British and global music each year. The winners and those up for the award are chosen by a large group of over a thousand people, including those from record labels, publishing, management, and the media, as well as artists who have previously won or been nominated.

The award first started in 1977 and was originally called British Album of the Year. For two years, in 1983 and 1984, the award was given based on which album sold the most, rather than through voting. Winning the Album of the Year is considered the highest honour at the Brit Awards.

The Beatles were the first to receive this award in 1977 for their album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Phil Collins was the first solo artist to win this award on his own in 1986 with his album No Jacket Required. In 1993, Annie Lennox was the first solo female artist to win. Adele, Arctic Monkeys, and Coldplay have each won the award three times, the most in its history, with Manic Street Preachers winning it twice. Radiohead has been nominated five times but hasn't won yet. The most recent winner, in 2023, is Harry Styles for his album Harry's House.

The very first winner of this award was The Beatles back in 1977. Coldplay has won this award the most times, with a total of four wins. On the other hand, Radiohead has been nominated the most times without winning, having been nominated seven times. In 2021, Little Mix made history by being the first female group to win this award. The most recent winner, as of 2023, is Wet Leg.

Brit Award Song Of The Year

Originally, this award started as the Brit Award for British Single at the first Brit Awards in 1977 and kept that name until 2019. In 2020, it was first called Song of the Year, changed back to British Single in 2021, and then back again to Song of the Year in 2022.

In two years, 1984 and 1991, the award wasn't based on votes but was given to the best-selling single of the year instead.

The first winners of this award were Queen and Procol Harum in 1977. The latest winner is Harry Styles, who won in 2023 for his song "As It Was".

Brit Award 2023 - Best New Artist

The award was first given out at the third Brit Awards in 1983, with Kid Creole and the Coconuts being the inaugural winners. Over the years, it's had different names. Prince holds the record for the most wins in this category, with three awards, including one win with The Revolution. Madonna, on the other hand, has the most nominations without winning, totaling five. Artists from the United States have won this award ten times, and once it went to an artist from Sweden. As of 2023, Beyoncé is the latest winner of this award.

Brit Awards International Group

Huey Lewis and the News were the first to receive this award back in 1986. U2 has won it the most times, with five wins. The Black Eyed Peas and First Aid Kit each have been nominated three times but haven't won, the most nominations without winning. So far, four female groups (The Bangles, TLC, Destiny's Child, and Haim) have won the award. Additionally, six other groups that include female members (Fugees, The Corrs, The White Stripes, Scissor Sisters, Arcade Fire, and The Carters) have also been recognized. The latest winner, as of 2023, is Fontaines D.C.

Best Dance Act

M People were the first to win this award, doing so in both 1994 and 1995. Fatboy Slim was the first solo artist to win in 2000 and has won it twice, just like M People, The Prodigy, Basement Jaxx, and Becky Hill. Jamiroquai has been nominated the most times without winning, with six nominations. The latest winner, in 2023, is Becky Hill.

S Club 7 has been nominated the most times without winning, with three nominations. As of 2023, Harry Styles is the latest winner of the award.

A quick history lesson: The award, originally called Best British Pop Act, made its debut at the 2000 Brit Awards and was discontinued in 2006.

In 2021, the award made a comeback with a new name, Best British Pop/R&B Act, after the Brit Awards decided to remove gender-specific categories. This updated version of the award was given out for the first time at the 42nd Brit Awards, with winners now chosen by public vote on TikTok, along with winners in three other music genres: Rock/Alternative Act, Dance Act, and Hip Hop/Grime/Rap Act.

Looking ahead to the 2024 Brit Awards, it's been announced that the category will be divided into British Pop Act and British R&B Act. This change is in response to feedback from the R&B community, who felt underrepresented in the category.

Best Hip Hop/Grime /Rap

Ms. Dynamite was the first to win this award back in 2003. Lemar stands out as the only artist to have won it twice, while Dizzee Rascal has been nominated the most times without winning, totalling three nominations. As of 2023, Aitch is the latest winner of the award.

A bit of history: The award started as Best British Urban Act at the 2003 Brit Awards and was last given out in 2006.

In 2021, it made a comeback with a new name, Best British Hip Hop/Grime/Rap Act, following the Brit Awards' decision to remove gender-specific categories. This updated version of the award was introduced at the 42nd Brit Awards.
