Australian Open Men's Singles Last Ten Winners

Here's a table showing the last ten Australian Open Men's Singles winners including the beaten finalist and set scores:

YearChampion (World Ranking)Runner Up (WR)Set Score
2023Novak Djokovic (5)Stefanos Tsitsipas (4)3-0
2022Rafa Nadal (5)Daniil Medvedev (2)3-2
2021Novak Djokovic (1)Daniil Medvedev (4)3-0
2020Novak Djokovic (2)Dominic Thiem (5)3-2
2019Novak Djokovic (1)Rafael Nadal (2)3-0
2018Roger Federer (2)Marin Cilic (6)3-2
2017Roger Federer (17)Rafael Nadal (9)3-2
2016Novak Djokovic (1)Andy Murray (2)3-0
2015Novak Djokovic (1)Andy Murray (6)3-1
2014Stan Wawrinka (8)Rafael Nadal (1)3-1

So it's fairly evident the top guys have dominated the Australian Open over the past ten years and if you extend the period back to 2004 when Roger Federer won the first of his six Australian Open titles then the winners list equates to five individuals spanning seventeen years.

Apart from the four individual winners over the last ten years, Federer, Djokovic, Nadal and Wawrinka we are adding Marit Safin (2005).

In actual fact, in the current period back to 2011 there have only been nine individuals make the Australian Open final, Federer, Djokovic, Wawrinka, Nadal (four times runner up), Murray (four times runner up), Cilic, Thiem, Medvedev and Tsitsipas so finding an each way value surprise package has not proven fruitful.

The previous Australian Open trends of the last ten winners are obviously swayed heavily by the impressive record of Novak Djokovic with a total of 6 titles and 9 since 2011. When looking to make our 2024 Australian Open bets it's worth noting the following trends especially if looking for an each way alternative away from the top seeds.

World Ranking

  • The last ten losing finalists were ranked no worse than number 9 in the world.
  • Eight out of the last ten winners were ranked inside the top 5 in the world, the lowest ranked was Roger Federer (17) in 2017 and that was largely due to the fact he didn't play an ATP Tour match after Wimbledon in 2016. The other victor Stan Wawrinka was ranked 8 in the world when winning in 2014.
  • The world number 1 though has won just four of the last ten titles, Novak Djokovic (number 1 at the time) could not compete in 2022 due to a visa issue entering Australia.

Career Hard Court Statistics & Slam Form

  • Nine of the last ten winners had already won a grand slam tournament, Stan Wawrinka (2014) was the exception.
  • Nine of the last ten winners had won at least 79% of their career hard court ATP Tour matches prior to winning the Australian Open. The only exception being Stan Wawrinka in 2014, Stan had won 62%.

Australian Open Ladies Singles Last Ten Winners

Here's a table showing the last ten Australian Open Ladies winners including the beaten finalist and set scores:

YearChampion (WR)Runner Up (WR)Set Score
2023Aryna Sabalenka (5)Elena Rybakina (25)2-1
2022Ashleigh Barty (1)Danielle Collins (30)2-0
2021Naomi Osaka (3)Jennifer Brady (24)2-0
2020Sofia Kenin (15)Garbine Muguruza (32)2-1
2019Naomi Osaka (4)Petra Kvitova (6)2-1
2018Caroline Wozniacki (2)Simona Halep (1)2-1
2017Serena Williams (2)Venus Williams (17)2-0
2016Angelique Kerber (6)Serena Williams (1)2-1
2015Serena Williams (1)Maria Sharapova (2)2-0
2014Li Na (4)Dominika Cibulkova (24)2-0

We've not had a back to back Australian Open ladies champion since Victoria Azarenka in 2012 and 2013, although Naomi Osaka has won twice since 2019. With Ashleigh Barty retiring from tennis in 2022 this trend will continue through 2023.

Looking at the finalists in the last ten years, we have had seven ranked outside of the top ten. Li Na ranked 11 in the world when making the final in 2011 also made the final in 2013 when ranked 6 and then became an Australian Open winner in 2014 beating Dominika Cibulkova (ranked 24).

Former Wimbledon winner Garbine Muguruza who had slipped to number 32 in the world rankings was beaten in the final by Sofia Kenin in 2020 and Jennifer Brady (24) made her first slam final in 2021 losing to Naomi Osaka. Danielle Collins (ranked 30) was another first time grand slam finalist in 2022.

Losing 2023 finalist Elena Rybakina was ranked 25 heading into the tournament but was the defending Wimbledon champion.

On the evidence of the last ten years despite the open nature of the ladies tour, perhaps we can focus on the current top six in the world rankings ?

World Ranking

  • Although the ladies tour has been a little more tricky to predict since Serena Williams took her maternity break in 2017, it's still interesting to note that nine of the last ten Australian Open Ladies winners have all been ranked inside the world's top six.

Career Hard Court Statistics & Slam Form

  • All ten winners had won over 120 career hard court matches prior to winning the title.
  • Six of the last ten winners had already won a grand slam tournament. The exceptions being Angelique Kerber (2016), Caroline Wozniacki (2018), Sofia Kenin (2020) and Aryna Sabalenka (2023).
  • Six of the last ten winners had won over 70% of their career hard court matches prior to winning the title. The exceptions being Sofia Kenin (68%), Angelique Kerber (66%) & Naomi Osaka (62% & 66%).
  • Seven of the last ten were winning their first Australian Open title, the exceptions being Serena Williams (2015 & 2017) and Naomi Osaka (2021).

Previous Australian Open form has not been much of a pointer for the following year's winner. Angelique Kerber (2016) exited in the first round in 2015, Sofia Kenin (2020) and Caroline Wozniacki (2018) departed in the 3rd round in their previous year, Naomi Osaka (2019) and Serena Williams (2015) made it no further than the 4th round in 2018 and 2014 respectively. Naomi Osaka also exited in the 3rd round in 2020 and then won in 2021, whilst Ashleigh Barty made the Quarter Final in 2021 before winning the following year and 2023 winner Aryna Sabalenka departed in the 4th round in 2022.
