The top 8 ranked players qualify for the Singles event and the top 8 doubles pairs qualify for the Doubles tournament.
Although the WTA Finals is not one of the major slam events (US Open, Australian Open, French Open & Wimbledon) it is considered to be the end of season championships thus carrying huge prize money of $15 million. The tournament has undergone a few tweaks including a change of name since it was first staged in 1972 having also been known as the WTA Tour Championships.
What is the WTA Finals format ?
The WTA Finals Singles & Doubles format is a round robin first stage with the eight players (singles) and pairs (doubles) split into two groups of four and each player/pair in their group playing each other once. All WTA Finals matches are best of three sets and the top two players/pair in each group after their three matches proceed to the Semi Finals where the winner of each group will play the runner up from the other group.
