  • Rachael Blackmore favourite in the market for the RTE Sportsperson of the Year award

  • Boxer Katie Taylor, who won the award last year, also features in the nominations!

Rachael Blackmore favourite in the market for the RTE Sportsperson of the Year award

The RTE Sportsperson of the Year award is given to the most successful Irish sportsperson from the past year.

Similar to the Sports Personality of the Year award here in Britain, the award looks to give athletes recognition for a great 12 months.

Rachael Blackmore is the bookmakers favourite for the award this year at odds of 2/5.

RTE Sportsperson of the Year Nominee
Odds Probability
Rachael Blackmore 2/5 71.4%
Kellie Harrington 9/4 30.8%
Leona Maguire 16/1 5.9%
Vikki Wall 20/1 4.8%
Cian Lynch 25/1 3.8%
Katie Taylor 25/1 3.8%
Ellen Keane 50/1 2%
Jason Smyth 50/1 2%

Rachael Blackmore is the big favourite at betting sites to be Sportsperson of the Year in Ireland this year after a tremendous year.

With 6 winners at the Cheltenham Festival, Blackmore took the Leading Jockey award becoming the first woman rider to do so.

Just a month later, Blackmore won the Aintree Grand National on Minella Times becoming the first woman jockey to win that race too.

A successful year like that has propelled Blackmore into a major name in Racing and that doesn't look like changing anytime soon.

A hugely successful year for Rachael Blackmore saw the jockey become the first female to win the Grand National as well as winning the Leading Jockey award at Cheltenham. At odds of 2/5 she's a big favourite to be the Sportsperson of the Year.

Olympic gold medal winning boxer Kellie Harrington is 9/4 second favourite in the market with bookies

Kellie Harrington won Olympic Gold in Tokyo in August this year after the 2020 Olympics was delayed by a year.

Harrington won Lightweight Gold, winning 5-0 in the final to become Ireland's third Olympic Boxing Champion.

At odds of 9/4, bookmakers feel that Harrington has a chance of pipping Blackmore to the award after a great year.

With Katie Taylor winning the award last year, the voters might pick a boxer again this time around.

Katie Taylor features in this year's nominations after winning the award last year

Boxer Katie Taylor won the award last year, but features in this year's nominations too to go back to back.

At odds of 25/1, it's clear that betting sites feel that there's a minimal chance of her winning it again though.

With the award itself being a voted for by a panel of experts, that may make it trickier for her to be picked again.

2021 has been another good year for Taylor, with 3 fights and 3 wins making her remain unbeaten at 20-0 in Boxing.

Katie Taylor won the award last year and is 25/1 to win back-to-back RTE Sportsperson of the Year awards. The boxer has yet again remained unbeaten this year.
